Well, my brother in law was at the house watching the game. When the commercial came on, he says something like 'hey that new Benz looks a hell of a lot like your Porsche'.

 

Wasn't that during the 4th quarter? How drunk was he?

My mom thought it was a Jaguar commercial until she saw the nose (missed the AMG factory part).

Bottom line it's a long hood, swooped back coupe. Nothing unique to the 928 (Ferrari Daytona.....) and similar lines will always invoke comparisons to vehicles people are familiar with.

 

i love everything about the car except the front of the car. If the front of the car looked like the 928 it would be to awesome !!!!

For a new 928, I would want to see some iconic design elements, such as the rear quarter windows and a unique front light treatment that doesn't resemble other current Porsche models. You need to KNOW it's a 928 when coming up behind you, as well as when it passes by. Must be a hatchback as well.

I like this rendering as the greenhouse is pure 928, and doesn't look like every other modern GT with the rear quarter windows blended into the door windows. Even the tail lights on this one, while being modern, reference back to the original. Simple, clean, form follows function design.

 

The hardest will be the headlights. To me, those Miura-style (sorta) pop-ups define "The 928 Look," and I'm pretty sure they're no longer legal in a new car :-(

 

You'd have a pretty tough time getting a 928 past a lot of the current safety/styling regs in the US. Bumper too low (below the knees), headlights protruding dangerously, etc. Have to see the insides of all these candidates before making a real decision. Most interior designs are polarizing -- love em or hate em pretty much. Its the part I see the most of when driving, part I touch most too. Its getting tougher to decide on any of the 'exclusive' cars when there are so many and they look so similar on the outside. Decisions decisions...

I don't think so. More like designers are running out of ideas.

The 1968 Charger from Dodge was a revolutionary design. You know one when you see it. Same w/ the 928, as you just know...

There are others in history, but when a Kia looks like a Mercedes, or vice versa, then what?

And not all unique designs are appealing. Just ask an Aztec owner

 

Designers have to tread a fine line between being new and referencing their "look." And then of course, the lower end will always want to evoke visions of something more expensive. When you add in the current retro fetish (Challengers, Camaros, etc) then it gets even harder to find something that looks new. That being said, love it or hate it, the C7 Corvette looks pretty radically new to me, and the Jag F-type mentioned before is absolutely gorgeous.

 

Yep. BMW is the official Bad Man Wagon but in black the R-version looks pure friggin' evil. It looks spectacular and absolutely timeless from every angle... just like the 928.





That Merc in the fist post looks mundane and boring in comparison.

 

Porsche makes a 928 today, they just call it the 911. The current 991 series is within an inch in almost all measurements to a 928. If the engine was in the front it would be what the 928 would have evolved into. When the 928 was discontinued the 911 started to grow into a GT car with the Boxer/Cayman taking the sports car role. This time Porsche was smarter though and didn't tell people what they were doing.

 

As cool as that F-Type looks, it just pales in comparison with the black 928 GTS & the Kinesis K28 wheels.
