Default 87 928s4 steering wheel shaking

All, I have a 1987 928s4 that was running well and was being driven quite a bit up until a coupe weeks ago. It started as what I thought was an anomaly but I would drive over a rough or uneven chunk of road and the steering wheel would jerk back and forth like it sometimes does with rough road only it now will not stop unless I hit the brakes and let it settle down. Seems to do it more over a couple days and stopped driving it as I assumed it could be dangerous. We jacked up the front end and applied pressure to see if any play in the wheels on both sides and there was none.....thinking ball joints or something. Did some rudimentary checking of the other front end pieces and do not see anything obvious. I am no mechanic unfortunately but did have another more talented member of the 928 club also take a look and we are not sure what might be causing this issue. We are speculating there may be something with the steering column or power steering but looking for some insight before I punt and take it the shop. I appreciate any feedback...thanks.

Or maybe just one side tie rod. I've had that happen also.

Eiiither way.

It's time to monetize the rack, and inner and outter tie rods, and lower ball joints.

Its..easier IMHO to do all of this at once, INCLUDING removing and installing the new tie rods on the bench with the rack on it..than in the car...and 4x easier doing the tie rod boots on the bench..ugh.

And with a new rack, ya dont need the fancy rack bushings, IMHO.

Tie rod ends will do this, inners most likely. If your rack is making this the issue then something is really messed up.

True, but if you are used to crisp steering, it's a real good idea to buy the new rack without stock bushings and install the Delrin bushings right from the get go else you'll be doing it next year.

Ive done both, and the car felt just as crisp with a new rack, and probably will for the next 20yrs.

"Because rubber" isnt enough reason, unless oil swollen and rotted after 25yrs."

Wasnt worth the effort to me to bang out perfectly good brand new material for a different likely not measurable..new.

Agree with Speedtoys, just get a rack. The new rubber bushings are going to be fine for a great many years. I won't install the delrin ones unless the rubber ones are crapped out.

Thanks all! I know what to check now and read some other posts with similar suggestions. The steering did have too much play in it prior to this issue.
