Question Rear Hatch Squeak Driving Me Nuts ...

I have searched the archives for rear hatch squeak solutions with no luck. So far I have lubed everything in sight (hinges, standoffs, latch, wiper connection, ...) and tightened both parts of the latch. If I push down on the center of the hatch when it is closed I can hear the squeak, but I still can't figure out how to stop it. Any ideas on next steps?

Have you replaced the two teflon "stickers" that are supposed to be placed on the hatch above the rubber blocks midway up each side??

I don't see any teflon stickers. I have the rubber blocks (each have three shims behind them) but no teflon stickers. I will take a look at some other cars tonight at a Detroit Area 928 meeting. I lubed the rubber blocks and it didn't help. The squeak seams to be coming from the latching mechanism itself.

Sharks....I had that problem for a long time. The teflon stickers (though they look pretty chewed up now) stopped the squeaking. I'll show them to you at the Lone Star on Thursday.

I concur. The teflon stickers fixed it for me last year.

When i bought my car it was quiet.
One day I discovered that the left rubberblock was tilted so only one end of it touched the rear bootlid.
I couldn't resist adjusting it to normal position again.
Next drive the squiking was there.
Changed it back to the un normal position, gone.

Rubber wedges deteriorate with age.

If you look closely at the adjoining surfaces, you'll see rubber smear on the painted surface. Clean it up and the squeek is temporarily gone.

Replace the rubber wedges, reuse the backing plates. Teflon is also a solution.

Apply 303 protectant to rubber seals on some sort regular basis. Enjoy squeak free driving.

I also have the squeak- have teflon pads, tight latching, adjusted side rubbers, cant get rid of it. I put it down to the rubber liner of the receiver being long gone, and they are not cheap to replace the whole unit. Sometimes I think it is the wiper rattling as I drive over anything not smooth, but removing the whole assembly still leaves me with noises.

I met about a dozen shark owners last night at the monthly Detroit Area Meeting. I saw the teflon stickers and will purchase them for my car, but the squeak is definatly coming from the latching mechanism or the wiper mechanism and not from the rubber allignment blocks. Looks like I may have to try tearing down the latch.

If it is a rattle rather than a squeak, check to see that the rubber grommet hasn't fallen out of the hatch latch receiver. I had never noticed it was there until it was pulled out by the hatch side locking mechanism and fell to the pavement. It makes a lot of noise w/o that piece. Susan @ DEVEK pointed it out to me on PET, but it isn't available as a separate piece.

Success, knock on wood.
I took the upper and lower latch apart and noticed that the trim on the hatch was squeaking when I pushed on it. The upper latch sits on the trim so this may have been the problem. I took the trim off and found that the lube between the metal clips and the plastic retainers had dried up. Put everything back together and no squeak ... yet any way. I have the teflon stickers on order too. Thank you for all your help.
