Question quick oil cooler line question

I'm changing all the power steering pump lines. Got into it last night and realized that the radiator line that runs in front of the radiator can't come out without the rad off. Just wondering do i nedd to drain the engine oil before cracking the oil coolers lines? Or will i just loose a bit of oil through the lines and the cooler? Or is the whole engine going to want to drain? I don't have any plugs handy to plug up the lines

If you have a 91 S4 then this should have a separate oil cooler located under the radiator and totally independent of it.

I presume you are referring you need to remove the radiator before you can remove the power steering cooling coil in front of it? If so you need to remove the transmission cooler lines on the passenger side end tank. You will drain out some ATF that needs to be replaced- it is not a great amount. Just keep the connections on the radiator and the lines plugged until you reinstate.

The transmission oil cooler lines are on the front side of the condensor seperate from the radiator. The oil cooler is on the engine side of the rad on the bottom. I just want to know when i undo the oil cooler lines if all the engine oil is going to want to drain out or not

With due respect one of us appears to be a little confused- will try to clarify from my perspective.

If you undo the oil cooler lines you will drain the cooler volume and some oil from the lines but that is about it but at the moment I fail to understand why you perceive a need to do this.

You say you want to remove the power steering cooling coil to refurb the hoses- to do this you need to remove the radiator. To remove the radiator you have to remove the fan cowl and you also have to undo the transmission cooling lines - the ATF cooling circuit runs from the tranny to the radiator cooling coil, then to the external cooler and then back to the tranny.

The engine oil cooler lines do not impede removal of the radiator- whether they get in the way of anything else you want to do may be another matter. If you want to get at the unions on the power steering pump I think you have to drop the alternator first if my memory serves me correctly.

Trust the above helpful.

place a pan under the lines, oil cooler and or Trans, and remove the top line(s) first, very little fluid will come out.

When you remover the lower lines (either one) the contents of the cooler will drain, you do not need to drain the oil(s) before removing the cooler lines.

Edit: make sure you use the correct wrenches and counter hold the Radiator fittings else risk damage to the internal cooler (NLA)

It was a late night i just assumed the oil cooler was mounted to the bottom of the rad. If not then great. As to where I'm at i have the power steering pump, power steering reservoir, altenator, all the coolant hoses removed, and the coolant manifold off. I was at the point where i was starting to remove and replace all power steering lines. I was hoping by removing the rad and just remove the one bracket on the drivers side i could pull that power steering radiator line up and out. Also the extra room will be nice. Would have pulled the rad right off the start if i knew i was going to have to anyways. Thanks for the help

The radiator sits on rubber mounts within a frame- the oil cooler is totally independent and sits under this frame. Once the fan shroud and transmission cooler lines are removed the radiator can lift out. You may have to remove some air pump hoses as well but I threw mine out years ago.

I'll be throwing those air pump lines out for sure. Went with an x pipe last year. For some reason the air pump still had a belt on it but the ac compressor's belt was missing. This was my dad's car and it's been a bit neglected. Can't even tell me why it's not there. Plus there was no sign of a belt siezing up. Got a new compressor, drier, and expansion valve on the way. Hope there is no leaks in the system elsewhere.
