Default Tob/ release bearing

Release bearings/ throw out bearings -

Are there any that are just round on the outside? I seem to have rebuilt one with no straight shoulders on it - do I need to find one to proceed for the 80-86 kind?

And if I did need to get the shell with the square sides, there are no new ones and the used ones are few and far between?

I would like or be mad at someone for these NLA parts and the 4 fold increase in the price of others. I'm not sure who to blame though (other than Porsche)

It's sad.

Here are all the TOB pics I have, not sure which angle you're looking for. Holler if you need a different view.

Dual disc (80-86):

note that all spring washers were not as springy....and the wimpy ones do not function correctly.

The comment on the spring is a bit confusing. Which way is "up?" I do mine with "fingers towards bearing."

Glad I kept a "bad" one years ago. It became a "good" one recently.

'Up' is relative to the position of the TOB and PP during assembly. You're right, it's confusing when shown in isolation, it made more sense in the original thread where I was showing the stepwise assembly of the clutch pack, along with the TSB showing orientation of the spring washer. Concave is 'up' in that diagram.

Wow, thanks.

The first pic is of a TOB with no shoulders - is that one that had them "fall off"?

Because the second pic is of one with the flat shoulders, which is what I am used to.

Also, I will need to get a new washer, I see, as the one I have is worn.

Not sure what you mean by 'fall off' - there are two flats on the sides of the TOB that locate it in the opening of the release arm, but that TOB wasn't modified in any way- it's the one I had in the GTS with the upgraded DD clutch setup for a while. Worked fine as it was, except for the part about not handling the torque.

By shoulders do you mean the flats on the side of the TOB, or the surfaces on which the release arm pushes on the TOB as it pivots rearwards?

The flats on the side. See pic. The one I rebuilt does not have these. It is now more narrow than what will fit in the arm.
