89 Car with Torque Tube noise - Need repair
I have removed a 928 trani and TT myself, but what a major PITA.
I'm looking for someone in the SF bay area who can help me swap the TT in my 89 car. Bearings apparently are failing now at 157K miles. Most shops want to pull the entire transmission and charge a lot. Devek Performance used to just drop the rear assembly part way down and remove the TT without major surgery. There's also the question of if I should just buy a rebuilt TT from 928 international or have mine rebuild locally as my understanding is the actual bearings are not expensive, but special tools are required to remove them.
Please PM if you have a shop, can offer a reasonable rate, know what you are doing. Let's get-her gone!!!

TT can be removed from auto trans car by removing the upper bell housing.
The TT can be rebuilt with sourced bearing or with Constantines Super bearings. Indeed 928 Int offer a rebuilt TT.
No special tools required; 6' broom handle to knock out TT shaft, 3" pipe to knock out/install bearings, lots of lube, cleaning supplies and heavy lifting.
I also had a beer during the TT project
Dwayne has a fantastic write up.

Take a serious look at Constantine's super bearing package.

The TT can probably come out without dropping the autobox, just cut the upper bell housing so that the drive shaft can pass through the gap. The trick will be tipping the autobox enough for the TT to be pulled forward out of the rear splined coupling.
I've done it on a manual car but on my own on an auto I elected to drop the whole lot in one so that I didn't put any stress on the rear coupling.
I'm mid job having stripped the TT down (it needed the threaded bar and shuttle method to get the old carriers out) Now waiting for Constantine to re-open on 1st June so I can order the bearing kit opting to just replace with new kit rather than rebuild as I have done before.
I had my autobox oil cooler lines rebuilt by a local company as one side is NLA and the other is $$$
I can't recommend a shop to do it for you as I'm not really local.

If you have a 5 speed it's that simple but not with an auto.
Most shops will remove the transmission because they know that it's not only the torque tube bearings that need replacing, but the torque converter housing bearings also. To not do one as you are taking things apart is pretty foolish to me and I won't do the job with out doing it right.

Jim, why didn't you call me?
I've done this w/o removing the tranny several times. A lift would be very handy.
I'm around.

Hey Bill, I will call you when back from out of town. I don't have access to a lift though. My friend's shop is just too busy to use
