Default 928 gear ratios.

Does anyone know what the first gear ratios are for the 78-82 928s?

I'm fairly sure they're diffrent, but not 100%

I've noticed that the first gear of my 83 is realy low, at 4.something:1! That offsets the high final drive. Hum...

I was curious about the earler cars with the 2.75 final drive.

Thanks.

Thanks, but thats no help, unforchantly.

I know what the final drive ratios are. I'm looking for the first gear ratios. This away I can work out the over all ratios for first gear.

I'm faily sure it's in the back of an 78-82 owners mannual, but then again, maybe not.

Exactly want I wanted. Thanks.

I've got the infor for my 83, it's in my owner's mannual.

I noticed that when Porsche switched to the realy high 2.2 final drive, they switched to a REALY low 1st gear, giveing a very similer over all gearing ratio for first gear. Hum...

See, I figure that Porsche didn't put an over drive transmittion on these cars. As a result, they had to put a realy high final drive to meet mpg expectations. To compensate, they put a realy low first gear in, resulting in a higher over all 5th gear, but a similer 1st gear.

does this make any sence?

I think im sure the older 3ps trannys had the 2.75s in them. I bet it would help alot to swap that in.

Your right, the early ones have the 2.75:1 ratio.

So, with a first gear of 3.6 and a final drive of 2.75, the over all ratio is 9.9:1.

The 83s have a 2.2:1 final drive, and a 4.1:1 first gear. The over all ratio for first gear is 9:1.

So, if you put an early rear end in an 83, you get an over all ratio of 11.5:1.

That sounds intersting no? Thats about the same ratio that 4.6l mustangs get when they have like a 3.77 rear end...
