One does not "race" in a gentleman's express. It simply isn't dignified.

The first time I learned that my 81 Rogerbox was quick at speed was when a Honda and an Audi (yes I know) got into a road rage fight.

Cutting each other off, brake checking, and doing other stupid things about 2 car lengths ahead of me in the lane to my right almost hitting me multiple times.

I decided to pass them because I got sick of their sh*t.

So I floored it, went into first, then shifted into second at 80 MPH. I never knew a car could slam you into your seat so hard at speed and shoot up in speed so quickly and as effortlessly as a 928 can on a freeway.

That was the moment I knew, that on the highway, the 928 is in a class of its own. Especially in the noise department
The automatics do 80 in first? Seriously??

The 3 speeds do. I hit 90 doing 7K rpm passing someone. I wasn't really looking down at the gauges while doing it

I love the 928, but it is what it is.
That is Saab though. When they came out with the 9-3 2.3 turbo in the early 2000's it was faster than a 996 turbo 40-70mph.

They have amazing in gear passing power.

On my recent holiday road trip, I encountered one guy doing 90 in a 110 zone (that's kilometres per hour - about 55 mph in a 65 zone).

Winding road, not much opportunity to pass safely, so I waited until I got to the next designated passing lane, whereupon Mr Slowpoke accelerated to 115 kph.

Now the traffic laws here say that you may not exceed the speed limit even when overtaking, so of course I dropped in behind him again. This caused him to slow to 90 kph again.

That's when I re-discovered that the 928 S4, when travelling at 55 mph, will kick down to second gear if prodded hard enough ...

... and that the passenger seat speed control device comes on LONG before the top of third gear.

I don't think the other driver had any idea what had pulled up behind him, he was just a general sort of jerk, and would have done the same to any other car.

On the other hand, my son has often made the observation that the throttle pedal in my car seems connected to the engines of all the cars around me. If I accelerate, they all go faster.

In that scenario, you're the rabbit. If a cop radars a random cluster of cars, all exceeding the speed limit, which one is he going pull over?

7 grand? I didn't realize they were capable of that kind of rpm. I thought I read somewhere that the 32v motors begin to float their valves at not much over 6. I have Porken's chips in mine and although they keep fuel running until 6,720 I really don't push it much above 6,100 ...I've gone to the limit a few times and was rewarded with clattering lifters the next morning when I started it....they settled down almost immediately but I took it that it wasn't happy when I pushed it that hard.

I can kiss 80 mph on the @$$ in 2nd gear if I take it to 6,500....

I've had my 928 for nearly 3 years now. I drive it quite often here in north Texas and have also driven it to all 3 coasts and back. I don't recall anybody challenging me at a stop light or on a highway. I do get passed quite a bit on interstates while going at or slightly above the speed limit, but not in a way that makes me feel challenged. What I do get is a lot of conversation when it is parked. Most are of the "Beautiful car, what is it?" variety. A surprising (to me) percentage know it is a 928, though, and want to talk about it.

I will chime in. These cars aren't fast. They can "feel fast" sometimes, that makes
them fun.

Does this type of driving behaviour happen overseas or is it just an Australian thing, very frustrating.

People do the same thing here in California, the speed law is the same too.

However cops don't really enforce it (at least where I am) so long as after passing you slow down to the limit again.

So I just go as fast as I can to stay in the other lane as short of a time as possible to avoid any possible collisions.

G'day mate,

No we have complete idiots that do that over here too!!!

Frustrating as all blinky doo dah.

Unfortunately it's a little bit of a psychological thing though, when one (lane) becomes two, the spacial "mind safety barrier" kicks in, and the dorks put their foot down, only to "lift" when "two becomes one".

A good example is at a road works; cones are applied in a "funnel" shape to trick the mind into a "squeeze" thus reducing speed.

Over here though, there is a little tolerance/discretion (unwritten rule) by the police to allow the "overtaker" enough distance to reduce their speed back down to the legal limit, providing they do not go "berserk" and blast 30 or so kph above the limit.

I have observed an "infringement notice" (fine) being given to a "motorist" (dork) who sped up just to prevent another (non dork) from passing, the infringement read "inconsiderate driving", most excellent, I thought!!!

I've also driven in North America, in various countries of SE Asia, and in New Zealand.

I have never encountered that sort of thing except in Oz.

I even drove down I5 in California at 95 mph, and everybody else just moved out of the fast lane to let me by.

I thought I was toast when a traffic cop zoomed up behind me running with lights and siren, but he just went straight past, and stopped the Subaru that was weaving through traffic ahead of me.

I'm older then when I started this thread, lol.

I guess now I'm at the point where I consider my 928 "fast"....on a good day, when she's well sorted, in a straight line (or big sweeper).

I don't consider it quick.
My wife's five banger turbo Volvo is probably quicker. Of course the "cool" factor does not apply.
