Sean,
Any more information on that alternator? Model name? Standard fitment on later 928? Weight? Do I dare say price?

Thanks,
Mattias

How about engineering a stud to be used for the top mount instead of that ridiculously long bolt which always contacts the fan shroud when trying to remove the alternator. I would pay a king's ransom for that mod alone even without a bitchin' new alternator underneath it. Is it truly a requirement to remove the fan shroud in order to remove the alternator?, or is there some trick here that I'm missing?

when I sucked in a rock to the stock holbert alternator, Anderson sold me the GT alternator. what a great find. its smaller. I also put on a larger pulley to slow it down a lot.

actually, I bought the alternator, then sucked in a rock and repaired it at a regular alternator shop who had the very common inner rotor.

Tom and I removed/swapped 2 alternators without removing the fan shroud on our backs in a parking lot.

Indeed the long bolt can be awkward but not that difficult.

[QUOTE=super928;12140890]Greg my 84 is in need of more power. It has the stock electric fan. When the AC is on and then fan kicks in the voltage plumetts ! Will your alternator be available for a 84 ?

Sent from my iPhone using Rennlist[/

Hopefully we can cover all the different iterations. Porsche played around with the belts and belt location on the pulleys quite a bit on the early cars. Some are going to be a real challenge, but your '84 is pretty straight forward.

A stud would make the problem worse. The ears of the alternator have to be installed between two mounts, which would be impossible with a stud.

If one figured away to get past that problem, a long stud would require removal of the fans, the radiator, and the A/C condenser to slide the alternator over the stud.

That bolt comes out with the fan housing in place. It's not easy, since you need to hold the radiator hose out of the way.

I don't think Ive had any issues removing mine as well, but I might be missing some stuff vs the stock cars. not sure. certainly wasn't an easy job, but I didn't remove the fan shroud to get mine off either.

Must be a problem with the S4 and later with dual Electric fans factory. My s 16 valve came out no issues with plenty of room.

It's one of those things where the first time or three you're like, 'no way is this F'ing bolt coming out', and then you're like, 'I'm going to push this F'ing lower radiator hose out of the way with one hand while I hold the alternator in place with my concave alternator holder/kneepad tool, and shove the F'ing bolt in place'. Unless you're working on a 5-speed external oil cooler car, in which case it takes 60 seconds to lift the fans out 3/4 of the way, then there's plenty of room.

IIRC, sagging motor mounts drop the bolt path even lower into the fan console. Good reason to change motor mounts?

Lift your motor up a little next time. Stretch the motor mounts and you will find you have a clear path

Haven't heard anything about the alternators in quite some time. Any word on these? My ancient alternator is barely putting out 12V with my AC on.
