Default Porsche replaced the engine???

What's the deal with this eBAy 928? I don't know how confident I would feel buying a car from someone who spells at a 6th grade level.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6432

Vehicle Condition

Porsche replaced the engine two years ago on a warrentee for a defective water pump. I had them replace anything in the drivtrain at the same time so the intire engine and running gear is fresh.

Yea, I sometimes get caught up in writing the content that I may pass a few typos in my haste, however, these are flat-out bad spelling errors

"tractable" or trackable; "drivtrain"?

But what is really more disturbing is his claim that under "warrentee" Porsche replaced the "intire" engine on a 14yo car for a ...bad water pump??? HUH?

Next time the waterpump fails on my 4yo 996C4- I am going straight back to the dealer for a "new engine" wooohooo!!!

Yea, but that's ebay. That's almost any auction, not just ebay. If he's accurate, what a deal! A new engine -- if you are in a position to check it out. When I was looking and calling, I talked to some guy in Arkansas. I'm sure the car was a nice item, but when I asked about the A/C he said Oh, it's on the floor of the garage. Like it had slipped his mind, I think it HAD slipped his mind. I would drive a long way if it was a GT.

Could be that the local Porsche DEALER/SERVICE changed his waterpump, and it failed and cooked the engine...and it was replaced for that reason.

I am aware of Porsche replacing engines in cars that they have posted TSB's for (like the Boxster and 996) but never for a "failed water pump on any car, in any year. Porsche simply does not release or manufacture products that are that defective- and if so why did it take 14 years to fail? I have yet to ever hear that defective water pumps on 14 year old 928's are under recall for failing water pumps that cause serious enough damage or failure to the rest of the engine to warrant "engine replacement"! That is positively absurd.

Have you checked lately what Porsche wants for a brand new 928S engine? Please allow me help you- it's about $16,000!

A failed water pump "cooking the engine"?

No flames here but- would you kindly explain to me how a water pump would "cook an engine" if it failed.

I am really curious...

Well.......If he can't spell worth a darn, it is possible that he can't read the temp gauge worth a darn either. Of course, that is hardly cause for Porsche to replace an engine. Last time I checked, my states welfare programs reward stupidity, but Porsche does not

Obviously, something's a bit odd about the whole deal. I saw a previous Renn post on a eBay GT that looked pretty good. Generally though, I think you're rolling the dice with eBAy cars (and sellers?).

Yeah but, I wouldn't discount it as a whole. There are lots of honest guys out there selling cars via ebay. I have used it several times. While nothing ever seems to sell on the auction, I have sold two vehicles after the auctions because somebody saw the car there. In both cases the buyers were pleasently surprised to find that I gave good honest descriptions of the cars.

You can tell in this particular case that the guy doesn't really know too much. It would definately be one to avoid.

Sometimes the uninformed seller is passing on info from the person they bought it from.
The person who sold it to *him* may have told him that it was rebuilt at the dealer.
The only reason I would check the car out, is because it may be just an embellishment
of actual work that occurred. The engine may indeed have been rebuilt at the dealer.
Perhaps not under warranty, but it still may have been rebuilt, which is a good thing...

That drives home the point of documenting all of the work done on a car like this. It also is a very good example of why guys like us demand to see said documentation. Cover your a$$

If a metal impeller from a water pump let loose and ruined the block, would Porsche replace the block/engine?
