Default 928 Convertible ??? - Randy V ?

Hi Guys,

I usually hang around the 993 & boxster forums.
Occasionally wander around the other areas

Recently I spotted a convertible 928 - and felt it was a one-off conversion.

Today I saw a post by Randy V - and his avatar of a converible 928

Obviously they are not a one-off item.
Can someone tell me a bit more about these please ?
Factory ?
Aftermarket ?

cheers

They are all aftermarket, if I am not mistaken.

There are a handful.
Maybe 10 or so.
Maybe more.

I have one and still don't know much. There seem to have been two or three coversion kits. I have heard that mine...which is somewhat similar to Randy's...perhaps based on the same kit but implemented by different people...was one of 30 or 40 that were done by somebody in Costa Mesa, CA. I was thinking of getting the plate BXTRETR, but I don't want to be that obvious.

There was a company named Carelli that did a small series in the mid-80ies. I hear they went belly up at some point, but there are quite a few left here in the US. You can see some pictures of a nice Carelli at http://www.kondratyev.com/porsche

There were a few other conversions as well. Gemballa cooperated with another company to offer a convertible. Koenig offered one. B&B in Germany made a targa and a convertible, so there were lots of tries, but apparently the market was not big enough, or the prices too high - I don't know.

Another interesting variation of the "928 open" theme is the 928 Moderne Spyder by Spyderwerks (http://www.spyderwerksinc.com)

Some time back, I mailed Jaquemond about the convertible conversion.
I could send my car to their workshop and they would do the conversion including the mods needed to make it look like the one that Davis posted the picture of..that is a Jaquemond conversion...as far as the price...$ 20k....plus rims, int, etc....alot..but it looks really nice

I believe mine was done by Newport Conversions, but have no solid proof as the company has been out of business for years, and there's no build plate anywhere on the car.

Pics of my car here if interested:

In England, Lynx made a single convertible S. This was a black US automatic car. Even the rims were black.
They can do another one if you like.

Herbert Jurinek, Germany, has made many others convertibles, under his name or for Strosek also.
He can still do one and I have his address.

The Jacquemond car was a US car modified by Stramann in the USA before beeing sent in France were the body kit was fitted.

There seems that Porsche has made a S4 convertible prototype.

Randy,

Newport Convertibles is still in operation out in Pasadena.

http://www.newportconvertible.com/

I talked with them a while back and they still have the 928 as a target car. I was considering having them rework my top from a manual to an automatic.
