She's Ready For Summer!
Over the last several months I've spent some time and $$ detailing my '79 928 aftermarket convertible. Having finally acquired a digital camera, I thought I'd share the outcome.
I refinished the original phonedial wheels last year. Still looking for some 17" wheels for her:
Those classic 928 lines:
Baby got back - that wide butt we all love:
I upgraded to 8" headlights:
Restored the leather to like-new with Leatherique:
New monogramed floor mats from 928 Specialists:
Replaced the cracked pod with a new one from Dan Brindle 'The Pod Man', added a leather wrapped burlwood steering wheel (with Porsche horn crest) from Street Speed and a tip shifter from Jager Engineering:

Ah yes, the heart of the beast (air intake tubes removed to show detail):
I purchased an extrude honed euro intake that I had ceramic coated silver, installed a new fuel distributor, replaced all the hoses and vacuum lines, installed new red 8 mm ignition wires, hand painted the Porsche crest and had many of the clamps, fittings and misc. metal parts zinc plated:
Purdy ain't it - I like those zinc-plated injectors:
I also removed that crusty old hood liner, repainted the underside of the hood and installed a new liner from 928 International, including a piece that I custom cut to fill in that small hood area:
Whew! She now looks refreshed and pulls like a freight train.
Where's my sunscreen - I'm goin' for a drive!

Randy,
You are styling indeed. Now all you need are those 18' wheels from Eric at socal928. Put them on mine and all I can do is stare at them. Will post pic's soon.

Hi Randy thanks for the pics. You certainly invested some time in that one, engine bay is very impressive! I also electroplated all the areas I worked on and boy what a difference. I plan on doing the engine and bay when I rework the motor. Now my question how much difference did the extrude hone intakes make? All the best.

Randy...
You finally washed that car! Oh, and a few other tweaks I see too. Great job, the drop top deserved it. Hope you are well, see ya in July (24-31).
What's up with this web forum stuff anyway?
Later,
Marc
great pics, nice engine bay

Hey Marky Marc - long time no hear!
Glad to see you stop by. Defintely, we'll hook up when you're in town - it's become an annual tradition by now. I'll marc my calendar.
Tim - 18's certainly do look great but have too much downside in my opinion - namely the cost of tires and the inevitability of bending a rim.
Greg - I didn't do any dyno testing so can't quantify the gains. I also added a dual pipe exhaust system to replace the stock single pipe, so got additional gains there. I can say that the improvements are very noticeable and if I had to guess would estimate an additional 20 - 30 HP. This is factoring in all the mods, new ignition wires, tune up, balancing of the CIS system, elimination of vacuum leaks, etc.
John - I intentionally left that old cap on so the car would never forget its humble past

Hi Randy,
LOOKING GOOD !!!
The engine compartment work is outstanding, I know that was a lot of work AND expense, IMPRESSIVE !!!!
I love seeing 928s getting all fixed up like this !!
I am curious, what is the wire cable tied to the lower radiator hose?
BTW, I agree with John, that engine compartment DOES deserve a new Wiper Cap ($1.70), a new filler neck ($20.13) and maybe budget for a Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir ($36.69) to finish it off. The rest of the engine compartment looks better than NEW !!!

I've wondered about that myself as I've never see it on other cars of the same vintage. It is a conductive temp sensor that I assume measures coolant temperature for triggering the auxilliary fan or for adjusting fuel mixture at startup.

Hi Randy,
That 928 is sweeeet! You have done a great job with it. What do you do to engine compartment hoses?
What kind of digital camera did you end up with? How many megapixels, zoom, cost?

Thom - not sure what you're asking about the hoses. I just replace 'em.
I bought a Nikon Coolpix 2500 - $300 at Costco

Hey Brian - no, same paint, just buffed out.

Randy,
O.K., I guess you have done your best to provide a suitable home to what used to be my intake. My car must surely miss her because she is still not up and running. Although, Lucky says the only hold-up now is a replacement 944 throttle position sensor due to the 928 TPS's incompatability with the Electromotive Tec II. I don't know the difference but it kept the car from running. He als sent the Euro fuel injectors off to be flow tested and said something about not wanting to run lean at 400 hp.
Anyway, your car looks great!

Hey randy,
Great engine detail. Who did the coating? You should have the cross brace, distributor housing and fan bracket done next. Where did you get the 8mm wires are they solid core did they come with the plug boots? If so, are they OEM, if not how is the fit? I’m jealous. I want to do my intake and tubes, but I’m afraid my euro runners might get lost in transit.
O yea and the white car, it needs some pazzas. Like graphics, maybe some fine striping. Great car, it reminds me of mine, but I have a top.
