Default Smelly old carpet

I couldn't figure out what the strange smell was inside my car..until I took out the original carpet and foam pad....Man they stink,,what were they made of, looks like some kind of "hair" or burlap material under the actual carpet which was backed with something black on the bottom pieces..I tried soaking the entire pieces in detergent and bleach, but they still smell rank...Looks like some new carpet is needed to get rid of the smell I think it even penetrated the floor underneath..I think I am gonna go with the Mercedes velour carpet, has a cleaner look than the Porsche Silverknit, Any ideas or post your pics of some cool interior pics with carpet redone !!

I don't think the problem was in the original materials. A combination of big cigars and big (or multiple) cats maybe? Or perhaps mold from serving as a stunt double for the Risky Business lake plunge?

Hi there Jeff,
I am looking at a carpet kit for my 81 euro from this company.

http://www.classic9leathershop.com/carpet-kits-for-928/

I am not sure if the higher priced material they offer can fit my budget, but they
do also sell the padding and hardware sets.
I have a black interior and a charcoal metallic exterior, so I am thinking about either sticking with the all black, or maybe going with a dark gray carpet for a little contrast. I think the dark gray might be more interesting at this point.

Are you sticking with original colors?
Hope this helps, and
Keep the Euro rolling !!!

I recently bought the "standard" carpet kit from there, and have been slowly installing it, a little at a time. I'm sure the higher-priced stuff is more luxurious and I'm sure a pro would do a much better job installing it, but this stuff appears to be durable and it really does look nice. It's not as "shaggy" as the original Sliverknit (not sure how else to say it) which I think will actually modernize the look subtly. Robert, the owner, has been great fielding my many questions.

My car is silver with black interior, and I thought about going with the lighter carpet as well, but ultimately stuck with the black. My reasoning was to get real contrast, I'd have to go with a light gray, which would be hard to keep clean, and the darker shades I was worried would be close enough to black it would simply look like I tried to match and failed. I could be wrong, and it could look fantastic, but I'm pretty happy with the all black look so far.

Have you tried putting in the washing machine thru a couple of cycles. I took mi e apart a while back and put it thru a couple of cycles wash and dry and really shocked how well she cleaned up. You will figure what comes off and what stays. Most stuff can be reglued. Just worth a try. R Budds replacement kits cant go wrong either.

I pulled my carpet out and steam cleaned the sh*t out of it, literally.

Smell is gone, but it is almost impossible to get the funky smell out of old seat foam.

I ran my through the washing machine. I did cut the backing off, and got rid of it, and sewed on new foam. My interior color is linen, very light, and it came out better then I could have ever dreamed of. That old backing is nasty stuff...

The OEM Sliiverknit carpet feels soft and plush do to its "slivered" ends.
The end of each strand of the cut pile is "slivered" so it has more than one tip giving it extra surface area and space between.
Very much like the natural hog bristles you'll find on quality paint brushes which are there to hold more paint and give a smoother finish.

The drawback to this is that it holds dirt and residue from cleaning.
You may have noticed when its cleaned it pills together very easily and doesn't seem to want to separate again.

The way to get back the separation and softness (and eliminate the nasty smell) is to remove all the dirt and cleaning agent residue.

And as some of our smarter folk have figured out, a good washing and rinsing in a washing machine will work exceedingly well.

Rob, often the fragrance in the car is a combination of stuff in the carpet and padding, nd stuff that's in the seat foam. The carpet can be cleaned if it isn't worn, but the carpet padding and the seat foam aren't really candidates to go into the Maytag. Do you have pre-cut padding for the carpets, and replacement seat foam available? I'm not sure I'd want to wrestle new seat foam in myself, but could be tempted.

One thing I noticed that helped get rid if the old smell is refreshing the center cassette storage assembly. There is foam glued in there that gets old. That and the glue they used don't smell that great in my opinion. Plus the foam will start disintegrating and pass thru the liner like sticky dust falling out anyway. You can clean it all out, wash the pieces of fabric that line it, and glue the fabric back in there. If you glue it with the fabric still damp it is easier to stretch to form. Then just dry it in place. Smells and looks nice and clean afterward, plus no more dusty foam falling out.

What was the name of that female spray? FDS?

I'm a little disapointed that no one has drug this "smelly carpet" thread into the gutter...

Am I the only immature one? Where are the Texas lads?

And now, back to our regular programming....

"Febreeeze" sheets under the front seats does wonders to at least minimize the "Old Car" odours...

Rob Budd's new carpet collection is a far superior alternative IMHO....
