Right now I'm all stock with Cats. Even though it sounds ok, I think I would like a little more. What are my options to get a little more (or a lot more) rumble out of my exhaust?
Rick, start with X pipe, sounds better and increase in HP. Then go from there. I eventually went from that to a custom system from the X back made at a local shop. Be careful, can wind up with something REAL loud. I had to tone it down from initial build adding small resonators.
I have an X, no cats and an RMB. The only "muffler" I have is the resonators between the X and the RMB. I am very happy with the sound and don't think it is too loud. Although our cars are almost identical, I think the resonators on my 86.5 are different than the ones on your 85.

Yep the 85 and 86 are different from your 86.5, the resonators and rear muffler are one piece, so custom solution is needed.

Are the X pipes available through our typical vendors? How about the resonators?
Can the Cats stay or should they be taken out of the system? I don't need them since my car is classified as Classic and it's not subject to emission testing.
Is this a DIY type job or should a professional muffler shop be used to install?
Anyone have underside shots of their setup? Or a good link to this subject? I can't ever get a good search on here, even with the "google" method.
Hey Rick. My sons 85 had the sweetest sound of any of the 928's we have owned.
It had stock Cat, stock mid muffler and a custom RMB.
That is not a great pick but it is from the rear and shows the dual coming out of the mid muffler and merging into one final pipe with no muffler.
Very low tones, somewhere between a grumble and a rumble at idle.
We sold the car but I actually traded some items to get that set up back from the new owner. I hope to install it in the 79 when I put the Euro S engine in it.
If you really want a great, throaty sound, pull that 32V out and toss a good 16V motor in that engine bay.
It seems to me that this job isn't a DIY unless you have a lift and welding gear. I wouldn't do it on mine, but I can't weld either.
Yes Roger and our other suppliers have the X pipe.
I've installed the X on both cars w/o cats.
On the 86.5 it was easy to install an RMB (removes the muffler) they are still available for that year as the muffler is bolted to the resonators, sounds great w/ only the resonators.
Now the '85 is another story; I've been running the stock muffler/ resonator combo for years but want more free flowing and deeper sound.
I picked up a RMB for an 86.5 as it has same side outlet as an 85 or 86, the S4 goes straight out the back.
What I'm planning is to custom build the RMB to X section and include a performance resonator to reduce the drone.
I'm going to need a pair of performance resonators, cut and mod the 86.5 RMB to get the inlet pipes to align to the resonators and then custom piping to go from the resonators to the X.
I'm looking for the right exhaust shop, unless I get my hands on a tubing bender and a welder.
Summit Racing has generic exhaust tubing kits, was considering that too, but it would most likely end up looking like a Frankenstein exhaust and that just won't wok from me.
Like Ed said, this is a tough DYI job, I'm thinking that too.
I have a Borla muffler on my '86.5, but it seems to be a complete custom exhaust (who knew??) with MSDS (probably) headers, x-pipe, cats and the Borla...no presilencers, yet it's really not obnoxiously loud at all. Part of me wants to try it with an RMB but that would probably be too much. I'm pretty sure there is no Borla cat-back system that is designed to work with the S3 stock exhaust system, unfortunately.
