Following this thread closely as the ´85 exhaust system is less talked about. I have a few questions,
What is the diameter of the pipe between the resonators and the pumpkin muffler?
Can someone post a pic of the pumpkin innerds?
Thanks.

The exhaust is 2.5 " pipe as I recall, haven't measured it lately, however I was just talking to a friend w/ a TIG and he's good.
I'll post pics when I'm done, just need,to select the correct resonator to get same / similarly sound as my 86.5.

And IMHO the diameter varies because it they are pinched and squished here and there in the factory run. But metric equivalent of 2.25 is close. Specs on the clamps would probably yield the info.

What I have in mind is, keeping a OE look, open the pumpkin, clean out the seeds, and integrate 2 flex pipes inside to keep each side separate. A RMB keeping the stock look.

Thanks for the links, I am going in!, I have a plan, and a welder. I only have one or two days on the weekends to play, so in a couple three weeks I should be able to get it done.

Sounds like you could cut a window in the bottom of the pumpkin while it's still on the car. Maybe with a dremel? And it would be an on car mod. If you are afraid of the cosmetics showing id take it off and cut the top. That way when it's reinstalled you couldn't notice it at all. I will be doing the same thing but I'm going to just cut the bottom out. The one piece exhaust has discouraged removal.

Any updates / sound clips? I'm trying to figure out which route to go with my 85. I'm leaning towards X pipe, high flow cats, and RMB.

Rick, start with X pipe, sounds better and increase in HP. Then go from there. I eventually went from that to a custom system from the X back made at a local shop. Be careful, can wind up with something REAL loud. I had to tone it down from initial build adding small resonators.

Here's my update.
I had the Motorsport's (I think) X-pipe from Roger installed on my MY 85 and had the Cats removed. I'm still not sure if the Cats were OEM or aftermarket High Flow Cats. The PO and I discussed this and he seems to think they were HFCs. Either way I had them removed since I don't need them for State Emission Testing and the X-pipe connected directly to the pipe after the Cats. I left everything after. Resonator and Muffler?

Sound: It sounds a little deeper at idle and I'm not sure if I detect anything different at highway speeds but do when I down shift. It's hard for me to describe. I think I expected more of a difference in sound than what I'm getting from what I've been told.
The throttle response seems to be greater. It feels a little faster off the line and just a little faster in general, I guess.

All I did here was hack off the pumpkin, and add a couple straight pipes. 2in dia.
Still have cats and resonator in place.

That's what I want mine to sound like. It sounds great! Can you provide a pic from the Cats back?
