When we filed the lien papers, any item over $4000, the CA DMV finds the registered owner and information. Maverick has too many aliases and we don't even know his true name nor physical address. We just went by the information that was provided to us by the DMV.

Grant to conduct lien sale from DMV is all you need. Prev owner(s) can come out of the woodwork after the fact and the DMV won't do much if anything for them. My lien purchase was the estate of Bob Crane's old Lamborghini Espada under similar circumstance and it was about 12 years ago. Doesn't look like the process has changed much if any. I bought the Espada from the guy who maintained Bob's cars, and once Bob died, they had to do the lien bit cuz I think Bob didn't leave a will, or some of his property wasn't declared or something(notwithstanding the bizarre circumstance surrounding his death).
Note; I'm not a lawyer, and I din't stay in a Holiday Inn last night so do your own diligence. If there is an estoppel of some kind by some court in the state, should be easy enough to find. The court orders are all computerized now.

Please let us know how many IMSA/GTP races it won? Competed in? Names of pro drivers(Heywood, Holbert, Ribbs, Aace, etc)? Sponsorships paid in? Good provenance in a track car will be worth plenty.

Doc,
Truthfully, we know nothing about this vehicle. I was just reading previous posts on this thread and what others were saying. I apologize if there was any misconception. Yes, we do want this vehicle to be gone. But if there were some heritage or someone that knows about this car that wants to purchase it, even better.

Well just thought I would look back in on this car. Looks to me that the car is now in the hands of that (Nigerian shop owner) what a load of crap. That owner was true and up front on everything I had inquired on, we're as the other party was not. Proof would be that the shop now owns the car. Maybe not for long now the paper work is all cleared, may look good sitting next to my other race cars. Clarify the title is now clean, now comments will change that saw them with my own eyes.

In this case, the car has little or no provenance, it's a case of a well modified(and untested) chassis of a +30YO model that was and is basically unloved by the mainstream, and the final selling price just isn't high enough to generate any kind of fight over the issuance of a title to the new owner. So, I suspect that with the authority to conduct lien sale letter, a bill of sale by said lien holder, and a copy of that document, no problems should arise on title transfer. The sellers have been nothing but cordial and up front so far, and I have no reason to suspect anything untoward should someone choose to make an offer.
Now, I will caution that the engine not in the car is NOT part of the lien authority. That engine is in and of itself personal property, and is not a segment of the lien WRT the car as titled. I would caution anyone that buys the car, and gets the engine along with it that the engine isn't covered by the authority from the state to sell the car(as a VIN entity) and gain from that sale. The same might be said for any/all parts or external materials not attached to the car at the time of sale. That lien would be covered under another part of the CA civ code which I won't be looking up for you'all.

Hmmmm. Good point docmirror. Hadn't thought about that.
If the previous owners were contacted by the state, and they failed to want the car, seems to me they wouldn't want spare parts and a spare engine that would be valued at less than the car with an engine in it?
This legal crap makes my head spin.
Would love to own this car, and soon after, kill myself in it on the track....

This could be a good deal for someone wanting a track beast IF they can get the paperwork sorted out. I would say $14k is a fair price with the spare parts. As Doc points out, if the spare parts are NOT included (and I wouldn't accept them unless there was clarity from the state that they were), I would say it's maybe worth $8k-$10k at best. Personally I'd say it's worth parts price (~$5k) which isn't much on this car. It will likely need A ton of TLC, but it will be cool nonetheless.
