Neat info, thanks for the peak behind the curtain.
I suppose it would be a inapropriate to do a data dump of all (applicable) 85/86 Vins, and the intake tubes? J/K, you're right I'd likely improvise in lieu of whatever the price would end up at..

It's going to be a while before I have this car sorted enough to install a supercharger.

The purchase of this car was a good 6 months to a year ahead of when I planned to buy another 928. My current goal is to do the bare minimum to make this car road worthy and keep working on my other projects before I go all out on this one.

Wheels will be upgraded ASAP though, but I already have a plethora of Porsche wheels stacked up in the garage. Just need to decide which ones to fit on the S4.
Probably the Carrera III's.

Congrats, E.

Has the front of the car been recently jacked up, or is the ride height set very high?

Congrats, Hack-meister! That was fast!

You may get to liking the drag-racing aspect of torque 'verters, quick-shifts, and kick-downs. (Recommend the shift-kit springs.)

You probably already noticed, but the hood shocks and knock sensors are toast too. Forgot that on my list.

First time I went to drive the car my left foot went forward to push in the clutch. That did feel a bit odd.

But - city, jammed traffic on interstates, etc. etc. you and that beautiful driver will like the automatic. When it is adjusted right, and starts in first gear it was a good choice by Porsche. The '94-95 electronic control is a good upgrade for sportier performance.
If I didn't already have two 5-speeds I'm not sure I would have been happy with this car being an automatic. As the 3rd one in the stable, it suits me just fine.

Bit of both, it is sitting too high. Alignment is on order once new tires arrive and different wheels installed. I have some Ott-drop links around here somewhere I'll put on too.

Yea, noticed the one connector is FUBAR. I have replacement connectors, will start with that since I don't feel like puling the intake to replace the sensor quite yet (as least I'm assuming it has to come of..???)

Thanks!! Just when I felt like I had the 16V's mastered, I go and buy an S4 to start all over again.

First up - remove the aftermarket alarm before it wigs out and wakes up the neighbors.

One of the first things to do is to disconnect the exhaust at the exhaust manifolds, lower it down, remove the lower bell housing, and check the flexplate to make sure it is not "crushed" into the flywheel.

Check the endplay and make sure it is normal....then you can breathe again.

You can "patch" the problem by installing either one of Porken's clamps or Constantine's clamps....they both address the effect, but not the cause.

It turns out, as the torque tube shafts age, they twist more and more...easier and easier. (This is why there were never "flexplate" issues until the cars had acquired over approximately 80,000 miles.) The problem is a function of the material that they are made from. The steel used is designed to twist....and to return....without breaking.

What happens, over time, is that the steel yields easier and easier to twisting....which pulls the torque tube shaft out of the front clamp harder and harder. Eventually, the "twisting amount" becomes so great that the clamp has no choice but to slip.....and when the driveshaft relaxes, the flexplate is forced into the flywheel.

Both of the clamps offered will fix the "effect". However, the shaft still twists too far and gets shorter....which transfers the load to the front of the engine thrust bearing...and away from the rear of the thrust bearing. Fortunately, that "load" is instantaneous and not constant, like when the flexplate is forced forward from the shaft slipping out of it....so the damage is not as severe.....but the huge "pull backwards" does cause a measurable loss in power output.

The only way to "fix" the real problem is with a new piece of steel....a new torque tube shaft.

There's a whole bunch more to this story, which I certainly should not be wasting band width telling on your thread, but that is the "short version".

Hacker....on any late "automatic" vehicle...this should be priority #1.

Yup, it's been up on jack stands since arriving home.

I've never checked end play before but multiple attempts moving the crank back and forth, reading and re-reading Tony and Bill's thread...... I'm confident everything OK.
Measuring the flex plate before loosening the pinch bolt yielded .45mm to 2.24mm depending on where I put the feeler gauge. From what I'm reading this is "normal".

Transmission was just over 1 1/2 quarts low, all topped off now and ready to go for a drive.

While playing with the transmission fluid level I had the car running for quite some time. I kept adding some fluid, going through the gears..... first time doing this I was really paranoid about over filling.
Meanwhile I kept checking the engine with the infrared gun to make sure temps were OK since the pod gauge is a bit wonky (it falls to the bottom, smack the pod it goes up to the middle when the engine is warm).
The fans cycled as they should, temps held.... so far so good.

Pulled all the plugs, they look clean and are copper NGK's of the correct heat range. Two holes show signs of valve cover leaks, few bits of oil around the top of the plug, nothing to get excited over.
I was going to do a compression check but I broke my gauge.

Add to that the pod lights kind of work, so pulling the pod is definitely in my future.

I think the cool thing about the Rogerbox is the "tuneability". You can adjust linkage and pressures to get either a very smooth ride or amp it up to a much sportier feeling. I don't know squat about transmissions of this era but I'm sure most have some ability to adjust these settings.
I am still learning what does what but I am getting it in the direction I like- a firm shift, quick kickdown, and holding shifts longer.

Love the color and the absence of rub strips, but not the transmission.
