Exclamation Car shuts off while driving

My car is a 84S, Daily driver and I put about 100 miles a day on her.

First thing in the morning on the way to work. I start the car and after about 5 or 6 miles while traveling around 40 or 45 mph, the car just "shuts" off. No dash lights for a second or 2, then the dash lights come on.
This morning it started on its' own because I was rolling, although it's an auto.

The same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. While under acceleration ( not fast but moving ). The car shut shut off.

The odd thing is it runs perfectly fine when I start it up again.

I'm thinking my ignition module might be going?
Anyone have any other thoughts?

I would say, check your battery terminals to ensure they are tight. Next would be the ignition switch.

I just went through this. I replaced CPS, relays, checked and cleaned all grounds. It ended up being my ignition switch.

spray some deoxit to the front and back of the CE panel after you have removed the relays and fuses.

Replace the green wire, at the distributor to ignition box.

Replace the running relays ,

NOTE your fuel pump relay isnt the normal 53 so make sure you get the correct part.

Inspect the battery terminals and add deoxit to them,
also if the ground strap is corroded under the shrink wrap then replace it ,
and clean the ground points.

Also clean the grounds in the hatch floor area as well as the ground for the fuel pump in the RR corner of the hatch behind the quarter liner.

Thanks for the tips.. I'll check it when I get home later.

Sean.. I found your thread right after I started this one. What a pain..
Funny thing is that it took 2 weeks and about 600 miles for it to happen a 2nd time.

I have a 2nd CDI ignition box (used) I bought when troubleshooting before.. Is it worthwhile to swap it or likely unrelated?

I had a bunch of issues with the car, so its unclear how long the problem had existed. I had at least a week between cut outs at first, but it progressively got worse very quickly.

Not sure about the CDI but if you have a known good 1, then it takes it out of the equation.

This solved a problem I had. Sounds like a great place to start.

+1

I had the exact same problem. I had a shop do some work for me, and the positive terminal was loose. Fuel pump relay is also a candidate or this problem.

Same problem here and the solution was in the relays... Fuel pump relay. Good luck!

The battery terminals were tight. I did notice a wire near the hatch release that
was damaged ( Hasn't worked for a while ) and taped it up.

I replaced the ignition switch last week.

So far no problems.
