Looks like the front knock-sensor connector.

No, the connector just crumbled, and somebody used RTV to hold the pins in place. This happens with the knock sensors and the crank position sensors. I think that is the front most knock sensor.

Thank you gentlemen, that makes me breath a bit easier until I decide to get new chips or that turbo I've been wet dreaming about.

First thing to do would be to hook up to a diagnostic tool to see whether the front knock sensor is functional. If it's dead, you can pull the water crossover and the oil filler neck without disturbing the rest of the intake, and get enough clearance that you can get proper torque on a new front knock sensor.

Are the knock sensors interchangeable? Meaning are both the same, or are they two different part numbers?

Was just about to ask the same question since I'm ordering one, might as well order both of them.

Definitely time to do an intake service.

Probably not a bad idea.... is this what you had in mind?

Both knock sensors are identical.

I dunno about an intake service- I mean, you can certainly do one if you know you have a problem, e.g.- an air leak, dead/sticky ISV, non-functional TPS, etc, but in those posted pics the intake looks nice, everything is otherwise clean and dry, and the front fuel line has been replaced. Not sure I'd mess with the entire intake just to replace the front knock sensor, unless you want to, or have a definite need.

The Pirtle writeup is a good one, and so is Dwayne's:

Is it possible to replace the rear knock sensor as well without removing the intake? thanks!

Should be doable- 'just' have to remove the MAF and the rubber MAF elbow. There are probably some 928 Ninjas with small hands that could do it with the MAF elbow on, but you want to be pretty close to 15 ft-lbs on the knock sensor bolts, piezo sensors need to be torqued down just so.... So you'll want some space to swing your torque wrench in there, to 20 Nm/14.7 ft-lbs.

Dont do either until you get the car running as it should be. If that knock sensor connector is in that shape both of them are toast under the intake. Which means you need to do a top end refresh.

Hence the "dreaming" part... When you say top end refresh, is that different than intake service.... Somehow I knew it wouldn't be 160.00 and a case of beer, seems more like two cases.

It all depends on how deep you want to go. If you don't paint/powder coat and replace every gasket/hose/seal/sensor you are looking at a grand just in parts. It goes up depending on how pretty you want it.

I will say that you should do it right the first time but I can advise that all day long. I had to pull mine 3 times before I got smart.
