Welcome to the cult! Here's a little sip of Kool-Aide for you! Dulls the pain when taken in small doses they say.

Seriously-- Enjoy the car! The first ride home CLT to MEM is about the right distance. Short enough to do a same-day fly-and-drive, long enough to get comfortable with the car on the way home. I took a couple days (Denver to Los Angeles) and it was great, but I wasn't that happy leaving it outside in a motel parking lot overnight. Your drive will be spectacular, especially if you can deviate from the almost-all-I40 routing and find a few more interesting detours along the way.

It's been my experience after owning an 87 S4 without rear air, and my current 89 with rear air, that the A/C worked better in the 87. The 87 was also black on black, where the 89 is black with linen interior, with black accents.

One thing I learned at 3rd coast last year was that Martin has a big 9 inch pusher fan mounted on his car's condenser, with front & rear A/C. He said that he discovered that the factory dual fan setup didn't pull enough air through the condenser to make the A/C work efficiently. His A/C will freeze you out of the car.

I've been thinking of doing this to my 89, considering the Vegas summers.

@dangerlab
Check out the seats in this old R and T review of the 928s. Seems like they look the same even though they have cloth inserts.

Congratualtions! (we hope!)

The drive home should be a great bonding experience.

As you can see from the avatar, the lil red bird made it back to the nest just fine. I am, however, afraid every time I start it up since the timing belt is probably 27 years old. P-tensioner and new belt are on their way to me from 928srus. Will be needing some special advice once I get into that job.

Your dual AC in front only mode should have no appreciable difference to a front only system. There are certainly more failure/leak points but if its really worse than your '87 in front only mode there must be some problem with it...

Larger condenser capacity (either via better air-flow or bigger/better condenser) will help the dual mode capacity issue - so worth doing - but I'd investigate system health as is first.
