Default Blown engines in race 928's....we are not alone

So three friends I race with blew engines this past weekend!!!

2 corvettes, one with full drysump custom built engine lasted 5 hours
other vette was on accusump, unknown age
E36 M3 blew after only 5 hours on rebuild....on accusump

SO it appears we are not alone..

here is video of m3....who put down a 1:46 at Sears....VERY fast....

I don't know what the rev limit of the rebuilt motor was, but he was really redlining the motor before it blew. You can see the tachometer on the right side of the passenger dash. Maybe he just over revved the motor and it let go.
Totally non racer WAG.

Shifting at 9 grand might have something to do with the blow up.

Jus' sayin.

No kidding. That's what I call beating on an engine.
No mercy there.

he shifts at 8000....which is quite normal since it "was" a built S52 M3 engine....I think the factory redline is 8000...

The corvette was shifted at 7000

I like my redline at 6000 much better....

Bottom line, high torque high displacement engines don't need as many RPM to make usable power... The M3 above makes about 10whp less than my old engine (me at 265 him at 255)....however I made 289ftlbs, he made 210ftlbs, hence the reason for so many rpm....

Keep in mind the pace that M3 is driving.....1:46.5 at Sears on DOT tires for a true (season champion) GTS3 car is impressive...that IS faster than Kiborts times..the same car-driver turns 1:55 at Thunderhill, which is nearly 3 seconds faster than MK on the bypass (mostly since MK doesn't run the bypass)....In theory MK could run a high 1:54....so roughly equal....in a 2810lb car with 255whp or 11-1 Kibort is 3000lbs off track with a 391 power factor or 7.7..... I hope my new setup will be right at 9-1

My new engine will be much higher in both, extra 500cc never hurts

I stand corrected(what else is new).

That engine shifted at 8(not 9) should have lasted years.

Really?? Ive raced both the red car ( in my videos too) and this BMW and the green one behind him. the e36 is a known quantity in the racing world. do they have issues on occasion?? sure they do. ive seen the SSF racer break the crank at the flywheel!

he is driving the car very well. the e36 motor euro or US 3.2 revs quite easily to 8000. this blew for reasons other than it was over reved. it has a rev limiter so as long as the driver didnt downshift incorrectly or miss a gear, it was just a broken engine to start.

that camaro was fun to rally with..... I remember him. all of us are in the 1:46 to 1:47 range.

lets get the story straight first Brian....

Ive raced this car. we are close. Ive beaten hiim as well. I run 1:46.xx at sears as well. I run 1:57.xx high without the bypass at t-hill which is near a 1:54.xx with the bypass.

I ran the bypass once in the past 10 years and was not racing. was on my street set up when i did that 1:57 playing around. I run 1:57.xx in a race WITH the long track (no bypass)
he doesnt have 255 hp, its more like 285, same as matesso's set up in his e36 that i raced for years. (or david smiths e36 as well). they all make near the same hp. the pumped up e30s (with 2.5 liter strokers make 240rwhp) and only weigh 2400lbs..
mine is 3000lbs as i come off the track.
the e30s are more like 2850 as they come off the track as you mention. the e36s are great handling racers at laguna, i would have an edge. at sears, its pretty close and at thunderhill, that first 6 turn section is to the advantae of the e36. a stock 3.2 S52 motor US will make near 250rwhp. the euro 3.2 or a US with mods , are both in the 285rwhp range. ive been on the dynos with them for a lot of runs, doing testing and tuning.

Everything has a design limit/failure point. If your V8 can handle sustained
7K rpm for a few seasons, then you have bragging rights.

yep, and those M3s are designed for 8400rpm shift points. we are stuck at 6600rpm, but for good reason. it all makes sense when you look at the HP curves. those shift points maximize your HP applied to the track, and are withiin the limits of their design.
