I'm going to be moving from Connecticut to Southern California (lancaster) within the next week or two. My question is in regards to shipping my 928 out there.
The company that I'm going out there to work for has basically given me three options. They will pay for the car to be shipped on an open carrier (I'm kind of hesitant on this option), they will cover the cost of a uhaul car trailer, or they will allow me to use an enclosed car carrier and have me cover the cost difference ($645).
I don't have any experience with shipping cars so I thought I'd ask for your opinions. As I mentioned, I'm hesitant about the open carrier and I'm a bit hesitant about the uhaul trailer because I have never towed anything before. I'd also have to check for insurance coverage while the car is being towed on the uhaul.
Cross country enclosed transport for $650 out of pocket....take it. Had an open carrier scrape the front hood and fenders of a car last year. Their insurance plus deductible didn't even begin to cover the repaint costs so I sold the car as is. Drive yourself, you will be driving for days and depending on your transport package, you may have to account for lodging, meals gas and risk accidents. Pulling a Uhaul open trailer in their truck is tough travel. I did it years ago and would not do it again unless I was forced to.
If electing to ship open carrier, make sure it's on the top level, otherwise your car might get motor/trans/etc fluids dripped onto your prize possession. I have shipped 3 cars from the east coast to TX without any drama with: jim@mercuryautotransport.com. Roger of 928sRus has also shipped at least 2 928's with Mercury without any issues.02 T

I'm moving to Los Angeles in 2 weeks. i looked in to shipping as well. if you can do 650, TAKE IT!!!! cheapest open carrier i could find (that i liked) was about 1100. Enclosed was around 1600 and up. We decided to drive it. hope the weather is nice.
I think I'm going to go for the enclosed carrier. I was leaning that way and you guys helped push me over the edge!
Dima, thanks for the offer, but I'm not actually booking anything myself. The company is making all the arrangements for me so it will be through a carrier of their choosing.
For $650 I'd go enclosed. That said, I sent my 84 via open transport with Angels transport (above) when I moved from D.C. to San Antonio. No issues at all--I thought it was a great company. I chose them because in many on-line searches, they were #1 in customer satiisfaction.
I used Intercity for my car and agree on enclosed being the best plan. They cover cars on the lower level to protect against fluids, which I think is a real risk to be concerned with.
The other thing I've heard are warnings to take absolutely all personal property out of the car as the carriers are not responsible for it and anything of value may be gone when the car arrives. I believe this relates to the times when cars get moved on and off carriers and who knows who is inside your car.
You know the vast majority of NEW cars get shipped on open trailers as well as all the wholesaled used cars..... problems can happen open or closed I have been involved in shipping moving over 100 cars Closed trailer the driver dented the roof on the 308 as he struggled to get out the window because the door could not open very far.
Spending an "extra" $650 seems like quite a bit given the value of an older 928....which does not factor in any emotional value
