Feeler: Manual transmission with LSD from a 1988 S4
#16
My 79 trans was rebuilt several years ago. Shifts great. No syncro issues. Just need to warm up before using 2nd gear. Just wondering if a late model trans mounts up into a 79 OB for future ref.
Are there early trans NLA parts like mentioned above in the later trans?
Just building a knowledge base for the future.

Thanks. Next question. I've always wondered if my diff is a lsd or not. Some time she slides sideways some times not. Never had the chance to lift the rear and spin a tire to check. I thought most OB's were LSD but my car is light on options except full leather dash. LSD doesn't appear anywhere on my Window sticker either. If my lsd is worn, how much in labor and parts to repair? If not lsd, how much in labor and parts to swap out?

the clutches for the limited slip are about $320 for the 4 for the tight 80 % slip, used slip is $500 plus minus... putting it in the trans 200-300 depending on labor rate.
best thing is jack it up and see what it does...cost nothing

LSD is worth weight in gold when driving on ice or on loose gravel.
Mine didn't seem to have much resistance in the garage test, but are just right on slippery surfaces.
Our non lsd car just spins one wheel and goes nowhere

IIRC in previous threads, the light 'em up test is the easiest test. On a flat surface I spun the tires many times and always get sideways. However on turns the *** doesnt always come out. Maybe 50% of the time only one wheel spins. Might even be more so on left turns then right. I assumed tired lsd, but others claimed that a regular diff will sometimes act this way?! Goes against what I thought but there's a thread here somewhere saying that. If the parts are all available and under 1k is the cost than I'll get it R&R'd this spring. Love getting her sideways!
Is this a transmission job for a transmission specialist? Or a job for my trusted 928 mechanic?

Swapping out the ring gear carrier/diff assembly should not be a big job but they should know how to at least check the final ring and pinion gear setup.....Porsche tolerances are such that it should be close even with swapped parts.

That is a syncro issue, BTW.
