Default Mileage Question

I was looking for some opinions on a 928 I just looked at that the owner claims has 63000 actual miles....says it sat for 15 years. Looking at the undercarriage the oil pan seams to have a lot of road grime build up. The plug wires are cracked and brittle...not sure if that is just because of the age or not.
. The car drives really well but I can not find any records on it on Autocheck that indicate registration or mileage. Any help would be much appreciated.

How long has he owned it ?? Is the odometer still working? at what point in it's life was it parked ? Year and PHOTOS would help a lot.

He has owned it since 2012...it was parked from 1997 till 2012. It is an 1984 928s manual trans.
. Sorry...no pictures...ran an Autocheck report and no records come up...no registration, smogs, titles, nothing. I have verified he is the current owner however with the DMV. He said he has replaced the fuel pump and radiator back in 2012.

If it has sat without maintenance for 15 yrs, the miles on the odo are irrelevant. You are looking at a money pit.

OK so thirty year old car and the current owner has had it for TWO years....I suppose the prior owner TOLD him it was original miles Personally I would NOT believe the odometer reading does not mean I would not buy the car just not counting on the 63,000 miles as part of the value. And most people would have some documentation something to confirm the odometer.

That was my feelings on it to. It does run and drive very well. I offered him 2300 for it and am waiting for an answer. He is asking for 3000.

No records, go by condition, the claim of low miles will be MUCH weaker if you need to sell it.

Sitting that long calls for a VERY detailed inspection, but someone expert in the 928.

Unless the seller is very naive that is a very low price for a 63k mile car in decent condition. I would start with the assumption the seller is not naive, and knows more about the cars value.

Just rolling dice with the info we have, ie nothing.

offer a price keeping in mind the car may need 2k - 3k in immediate maintenance.
WP/TB $1,800 low estimate.

That is what I told him. Timing belt, water pump, front chin spoiler, plug wires....it does add up

Yes it really can add up FAST.....I have said and often been quoted that these cars can be $10,000 away from being a $5,000 car....and many people have experienced that.

Certainly things do add up, but you since you are looking at an 84, the timing belt might not need to be done immediately. 16V means a lot less worries. Plus, a DIY TB/WP job isn't nearly $1800.
Safety concerns like brakes and hoses, right away.
Chin spoiler can certainly be put on the back burner while you get other things sorted.
I would absolutely use these items in negotiations, but they wouldn't near the top of my concerns.

Jim is right about this, but I think very few of us choose to use money as a barometer of the value of car (to ourselves).

OT BTW Jim, do you know which episode of Sons of Anarchy you were in?

^thats where I am, 5k for car + 5k parts = 10k in car, still worth $3,995. If I have the seats and dash redone, it may be a 8K car.

I spent 2000 knowing I would need to spend another 8k to get it 5k (if I'm lucky). The fun is in the journey
