Default The saga continues

Sooooo.... the transmission has been rebuilt. The bowden cable broke so that had to be replaced as well when the tranny was put back in. After two days of total silence I decided to call the shop because the last I heard the cable was the last thing to do before them running/driving the car.
I called this afternoon and was told that last friday they ran the car and it had the same rattle noise as before. So they tore the car apart and removed....wait for it......The torque tube Which was why I brought it in there in the first place. I have to go tomorrow to check it out to see whats next. Looks like my intital diagnosis was right. Constantine gave me some info to take with me and things to look for tomorrow. Most likely I will be ordering the tube tomorrow. So tack on another grand to my bill. UGH!!!!
Not exactly what I was expecting nor wanting to spend. The supercharger will have to wait a while.

Ouch. At least the car should be running smoothly and quietly from now on. Better to get that all sorted before going supercharged. Would cost more to have to go back in to replace bearings and the shot 3rd gear.

I should hope so. I'll check out the tube in the morning. Hopefully its the dampner and we can get this squared away with a Constantine rebuild. I want my car back

Superbearings and SuperClamp in route to the shop. They will be rebuilding it there rather than shipping it down and getting another back.
Another few things they found is that the previous owner had monkeyed around with the throttle cable and it was NOT around the pulley as it should have been. It was actually frayed and nearly broken and was also replaced. The mechanic said that I was only really getting about half throttle. So doing the math...half throttle, not third gear and I still thought the car was pretty peppy. Should make for a pleasant change once I get the car back.
Another thing they found was that it looks like the rear stabilizer bars on the suspension were bent by someone towing the car at some point. At least it appears that they are bent. Unfortunately I don't have a picture to reference

Default HERE WE GO AGAIN!

Last week the TT was rebuilt using Constantines Superbearings and the SuperClamp. The car was reassembled yesterday and low and behold....the noise was STILL F-ING THERE!
Originally the thought was the noise was coming from the transmission which is why they pulled it and sent it out for rebuild in the first place. Well apparently they didn't look at everything because the suspicion now is that the torque converter itself is bad or at least producing the noise. It was supposedly sent out as part of their service to be looked at

So tomorrow or Monday they will be once again pulling the transmission and taking it back to the transmission people to figure out where this noise is coming from.
This has been a month tomorrow and several thousand dollars later with the same issue present. . I'm surprisingly patient even though I've been calling them for updates every other day. If this attempt does not solve the problem, I have no idea what my next step will be. VERY FRUSTRATED!

Sorry to hear this. I have a rattle on my 87 at idle and it has fresh tt, tc bearings. Ruled out everything except flex plate rivets or bad new parts. I will be pulling the trans to get to the bottom of it. Good luck!

Weird! I wasn't ready to rule out the TT, apparently is something else. But be frustrating, because of the time to fix it and the costs. Please keep in mind though, the rebuilding that was done will last you the next 20 years. Sooner or later all of it is due.

Any possibility where the transmission mounts may cause the rattling due to them being shot and something just striking against something? Heat shield? Exhaust?

Getting a little worried myself because I'm getting a knocking type sound from underneath the car whenever she's in gear. More audible on an incline. Not as loud as yours but it may get to there.

+ EDIT

Going on what Aryan said. There's also fixing pretty much all the other issues that might have gone unnoticed. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise.

Avar...its not the mounts or the heat shields...those were looked at multiple times by myself and the mechanics. you can't make them reproduce the sounds. it is coming from the TC housing and resonating up the torque tube. It is possible that it is the rivets as the thread below indicates but they said they checked that and it seemed fine. Who knows......

There's a reason a TSB was sent out to replace the rivets with bolts and nuts . . .

I torqued mine by using a little math, though I don't know if it was right.

I put my breaker bar on, stood 18" from the pivot point and let it travel 1' at the point I was standing. I weighed right near 200# at that time, it moved 18" so I figured that was around 300 ft/lbs.

I'd show them the TSB that Jeffrey posted.

I was speaking with Roger and I actually may venture to rebuild them myself and allocate the money elsewhere. He made me feel more confident about rebuilding it myself. Also noted some people used math to figure out the correct torque. I think I'll borrow a torque wrench instead, don't want overtorque considering I've broken a few bolts on the car doing just that.
