Brett,

Do you mind letting me know how much the CV boot replacement cost? If it's cheaper than buying a pair of rebuilt half axles to swap and send back the cores (about $600 total in parts and shipping alone), I might just let them do it.
Avar,
the rear CV boot replacement/repair is 540. I won't tell you how much the rest of this costs but this car better shift and run flawlessly

I think you have issues with the valve body too. If I was you, I would get my hands on a good used transmission and just replace the whole thing. Trying to fix this can easily coost a lot more more than a good used one.

HUH??? How do you guarantee a "good used transmission"?? Mine was good and used...its just broken. It will cost me the EXACT same amount to buy a "good used one" have it shipped to me, have it installed...maybe more. Not an option at this point. Not to mention I wont have a 2 year warranty. I appreciate your opinion but that kind of irritated me...lol

What he said was these transmissions don't usually burn up clutches. Even in extremely high mileage cars. It sounds like there was a valve body or governor or some other pressure controlling part causing the problem that didn't pressurize the clutch pack properly. Make sure the valve body was taken apart and cleaned REALLY well. Then put back together correctly.

$540 doesn't sound back at all, definitely cheaper than buying rebuilt and swapping. Not to mention I'd need to find/purchase a torque wrench that can torque the bolts to over 300ft/lbs+ required for the transmission linkage.

The car is a 4speed automatic. its a clutch plate not a full clutch.. Not that I know or understand the relationship the valve body has to this.
they are repairing the car and taking apart and cleaning everything. if it breaks they will fix it again. I am planning on driving the dog snot out of it so if it goes it goes. I'm not adding more expense to this job and I don't want to be the dick who keeps telling professionals how to do their job.

It went away while the car was going but it returned each time I stopped.
As for driving, there was some hesitation off the line as of late but nothing major. The car seemed to shift fine, no clunks and smooth thru all the gears.
Flex plate check showed less than 2mm of bow
I had this same noise. I turned out to be the destroyed outer bearing race on my TT bearings. It slid down the drive shaft and rattled around on the rear TT clamp. Pull the rubber plug out of the TT at the rear and see if you can find something sliding back and forth on the driveshaft. For retention of your fingers do it with the car off!
Mine sounded just like rattling flexplate rivets or heat shield.

Why are getting all pi$$ed off? I'm only truing to help. The last S4 transmission that I found for another RLer was $400 and it came with LSD. The are ways to check even used transmission to know if they ok. The look and smell of the ATF tells alot. If they can fix yours for $500 and offer a 2 year warranty than that's a screaming deal but how on Earth can they fix a burnt up transmission for so little?

You misunderstood.

He's having the CV boots refreshed for about $500. He won't say how much the total cost of the whole transmission rebuild will be Way more than $500 for sure. That's highway robbery to get a rebuild for that little. I'd drop off my car right now, forget the snow, for a deal like that.

Not getting pissed off but 928 international shows a rebuilt tranny for $2400 an one that is 'used for right around 2K. I would not trust a tranny that cost $400. The rebuild cost is significantly higher than $500 and since I plan to supercharge it in the future I think the 2 year warranty on the transmission will be well worth the investment.

Price of a used part has very little to do with its condition. The $400 one I found was from another RLer that I knew for years. It came from his DD when he replaced it with a very lo mileage one. There was nothing wrong with it and I trusted him. Many times the source the part comes from is as important as the part itself. This transmission has been re installed in another car and has been running perfectly for almost a year. My take on the 928 Int price is that they rather sell rebuilt ones than used ones. Also, don't they require a good core in exchange.

This is true, The rattle noise was awful scarey, sounded real bad, and real expensive. I will never forget jeff's laugh when he pulled the plug and discovered the rear TT bearing was in pieces.

I appreciate your input but this in no way helps me with my current problem. i don't have anyone offering me a gift of a new transmission nor do I have the desire to spend the next 6 months trying to look for a super deal. I would like to get my car running and have confidence that it will keep running. I've put quite a bit of time and effort to get this car sorted.

Sounds llike you've got it under totally under control.
It seemed like your shop jumped deep into the trans quickly for fix a noise, but subsequently you described other symptoms that made that course of action make more sense.
We've seen 911 shops, and dealers primarily, mess up 928 cars, seems you found a much better one.

Trans fixes cost. Guy at work had a PT Cruiser trans rebuilt last month. $2290. Benchmark.

To find suitable used parts is a total crapshoot, even for those of us who are terminal do-it-yourself hobbiest bottom feeders, self included. You are wise to avoid it and to maintain the car more properly.

(BTW, Imo is overpaying, my last excellent S4 89 used tranny cost $100 from a hobbyist. Unrepeatable, but it sure helped me fix daughters car.)
