ROW Club Sports

As their name suggests, the Club Sports were unique to the 928CS and [I think] may have been fitted to the 928 SE [like Roger purchased form the UK recently]. I also have a feeling they may have been fitted to the 89GT for some reason but I am sure the 90GT had Design 90's in cast alloy.
If there is such a thing as a Club Sport wheel in 7 inch maybe that is what some after market outfit called them? Doubtless the "Concours freaks" will know the full details. Edite- see Rob's post.

Hi Rob
Thanks for the clarifications. (And BTW, I reget not having bought your GT when you put it up for sale.)
1.) I have 2.5 bar sensors from D90s that I scrapped.
2.) I will BUY probably from Roger some NEW ROW CS wheels.
From your statements I understand that you would recommend:
1.) I should buy 2 8" rims and 2 9" rims
2.) Use stock tire sizes (because I have Eibachs and the ride height is not standard.)
Thanks A LOT for the offer for the tools!! But, I acutally have a set of tools and new seals for the sensors too. The scary thing will be the price of new CS wheels...

Looks like my 7 inchers are from a 951: part no 951.362.115.30U
Rears 928.362.119.30U
Very expensive, 2100 with trading in stocks.

Hi All
So I am thinking on putting ROW club sports on my 90 GT. I am hoping somebody can give me some feedback on some questions/musings I have...
1.) I have found the needed RDK sensors (used) form the front rim versions of the D90s. I see no need to pump rear tires up to 40psi now the ZR rated tires are available. So, I want to run 35lbs at all four corners. I end up wearing the rear tires simply faster than needed with over pressure it seems.
2.) Then come the sizes. Should I go for 8" and 9" combo with stock tire sizes, or put 9" tires on all corners with the rear tire sizes? Since the offset is 60mm, this means that the front tires would stick out rather far. Nonetheless, I have heard about people that run 9" wheels on all four corners. No, I am not really thinking to go wider than the stock rear tire sizes.
3.) Finally what tires should I use? In Europe the Continental Sport Contacts would be available in both front and re-sizes. What is available in the US? Do I have import tires now from Europe for these strange rims?
Ok, so I hope I don't bore people with another thread about rims and tires... If anybody, Roger should be at least happy to read such a thread, because I am buying a lot of parts from him... And this will be no cheap project.

- 1988 CS & SE
- 1989 GT USA+Canada
CS rims with RDK:
-1989 CS & GT ROW
8*16 ET 60 front
9*16 ET 60 rear, with 17 mm spacers from the 944 Turbo (reference 951 331 611 02)
I would stick to the configuration regarding the size of the rims and tires, but a friend of mine uses 9" only with 245/45 16 tires on his track only 1989 GT.

In the picture Phil put up , the top photo is of the Fuchs ( Forged and anodised ) wheels ( often refereed to as the club sport wheels or just the Fuchs wheels & the lower picture is the cheaper made "cast alloy & painted " design 90 wheels
The design 90( lower photo) is the standard cast alloy and painted wheels ( in different widths & offsets ) first used as standard on the 1989 year type 944S2 through to 1991 ( fronts 7" wide Rears 8" wide )
Also used on the 1990 to 1992 964 911 ( different widths & front offsets as compared to the 944S2)
Fronts 6" wide & rears 8" wide
The 1990 & 1991 928GT had the " cast & painted" design 90's as well again different widths & offsets etc ( front 7.5" wide & rear 9" wide )
The Top photo ( club Sport Fuchs forged & anodised in silver ) was first seen by the public on the 1987 928 Club Sport ( 4 were built for Porsche race car drivers ) & in 1988 the club sport was available to Porsche customers ( quite rare ) none had tyre pressure warning , meaning no holes in the rims
In 1989 the 928 GT had the same Fuchs wheels , but were made differently so as to accept the tyre pressure sensors ( one year only ) Front were 8" wide Rear's were 9" wide , being forged they are very light & very strong
In 1989 , the Porsche 951 ( 944 Turbo ) with M030 package also received the sight & very strong Club Sport Fuchs forged wheels as well ( front 7" wide & rears 9" wide ) no holes in rims for pressure sensors , interestingly the rear wheels are the same part number as the Porsche 928 Club Sport ( 1987 & 1988 )
One last interesting tit bit , in 1986 Porsche made a special car for Ferry Porsche( from memory its an 86 ) , its was really just a 32valve 5.0L 1986 928S in silver , however it received the same wheels as the 1989 951 M030 received in 1989 , this 1986 928S in in the Porsche museum , so I suppose this was the first to get these expensive wheels before anyone else

There is NO Magnesium rim in D90 style as alluded above. There is a myth that the D90 existed in Mg for the 20 or so 964 C4 Leichtbaus, but it could never be substantiated.
D90s are aluminium alloy, which could contain some Mg but definitely not in large aough amount for the wheel to be called Magnesium.

Three Wheelin'
If you are patient nice examples appear on ebay routinely. There is a nice pair of 9's running now for $490. You could have them refinished and be way under the price of new. Eight inchers come up less frequently but do appear.

I supplied one set of new ROW 89 club sports to a customer of Bruce Buchanan's in Sydney.
IIRC about $7000 ish. I have pictures somewhere and will post them.
They shipped in standard Porsche boxes with no packing and moved around to the extent they were blemished (dings and scratches). Sent two back and even then another one arrived blemished. Typical lousy Porsche customer service and we finally accepted them with a reduction in price to cover refinishing.

RE: the RDK sensors, I'm confused- you have a set of ROW clubsports that have sensors in them? Or just a set of bare ROW clubsports that need sensors and you're transplanting sensors from your D90's to plug the holes?
The easiest solution is to fill the sensor holes with whatever sensors you have, and jumper the RDK brain between pins 2 and 13, then check your tire pressurs regularly, because you are a 99th percentile 928 owner.

re: sensors - RDK was standard in RoW in '89, so ROW 89GT clubsport wheels have RDK sensors too.
'88 SE's have sensor-less wheels, although I know of one where the dealership replaced them with sensor wheels to clean a car up for resale.
Globally, more 928 clubsport wheels have sensors than don't have them.
edit: just read the remainder of the thread and see this is addressed by other good sources like samuel and errka

Hi Vilhuer , I just googled up " Derek Bell's 928 Club Sport " & there is quite a few photo's of his car with the Fuchs Forged club sport wheels ( 8" X 16 , 9" X 16 ) & the car is mentioned as a 1987
So there is one of the 4 with the club sport ( Fuchs Forged wheels ) as a 1987 year type

I think for $7K + accessories, I'd wait until someone puts up a nice set of 8 and 9" Clubsports without RDK sensors, who would be willing to pack them properly, and throw in a 'free' 2-13 bypass jumper. I love the idea of RDK as much as anyone (for a time I was considering modding my U.S. Clubsports for sensors, until common sense prevailed), but I think it'd be easier to just find a U.S. set.
