The oldest proof I have of this is a October 1987 test of certainly the very first S4 CS prototype, then called "Leichtbau".

There is NO Magnesium rim in D90 style as alluded above. There is a myth that the D90 existed in Mg for the 20 or so 964 C4 Leichtbaus, but it could never be substantiated.
D90s are aluminium alloy, which could contain some Mg but definitely not in large aough amount for the wheel to be called Magnesium.

You use the word "style" to imply this covers the CS wheels I presume. All I can say is the CS wheels to my knowledge are forged [as are S4 wheels], they appear to be very light compared to stock wheels and that usually implies magnesium was used in the alloy. I have always understood that the CS wheels were made of magnesium alloy, my friend over here purchased a set from an Aussie chap I seem to remember which I have had in my hands but that does mean to say "it is so".
If anyone knows the reality for sure do fire away.

Here is a picture of the marking of the inside of CS Design rim.
If I'm correct, the AS10.62 indicates an alloy mainly made of aluminium (at least 99%) + Silicium.
032598 is certainly the DIN designation for the same material.
The "fox head" is Fuchs logo.
So the rims use no magnesium. That is a good thing for a street car...

The D90 and the Club Sport wheels are NOT Mg. I have had lots of them, had some repaired, and also owned Mg wheels (944 Turbo Cup race wheels in phone dial style and the 964 RS wheels). The tech who repaired my D90 and Club sport rims for me tells me they are aluminium, not Mg.

Fred, The use of "style" was not the best choice of word.

After regards- good if someone can confirm my observation that the CS wheels are lighter and if so, why -and more to the point why they are so expensive and why folks seemingly go Ga-Ga over them. Needless to say nothing that comes out of a Porsche box is going to be cheapbut the CS wheels presumably have a kudos for more than the fact they are called "Club Sport".

Well, that's just %F*U#C!K?I*N$G+ crazy. I figured it would be around 6K. But, that AND the stupidly bad packaging?
Now, where did those damn D90s go??? I haven't abandoned yet, but I might look for a used set in this case. There's no way I'm ordering something like that and have to fight shipping damages...

Hi Fred , the Fuchs ( that's the manufacturer ) forged wheels , meaning ( like you correctly stated ) the standard 928S4 " manhole covers " & the so called Club Sport wheels ( similar but bigger venting holes) , be it on the 1987 - 1989 club sport / GT variants of the 928 & the 1988 - 1989 944 Turbo S are lighter because of the forging process , meaning there is actually less metal as compared to the cheaper cast wheels( less weight ) , but the forged wheels alloy is a lot denser ( lees or no air bubbles in the alloy as compared to cast) because they are formed under high pressure , this forging process is expensive & the very high quality finish ( no sand cast imperfections etc )which is perfect for finishes like anodising etc
Forged one piece wheels ( be it Fuchs ) or others is a near perfect wheel for strength & weight as compared to cast or spun etc

Still not sure I understand the attraction of the CS wheel unless I had a CS [I wish!]. For the cost of new CS rims I would be purchasing a good set of 3 -piece wheels and enjoy spending the savings on other goodies.
Intersting how stories of Mag alloy propagate. To be fair, as a motorcyclist, they were all the vogue when 1 piece wheels hit the motorcycle market in the late 70's of whenever it was. Stil not sure I understand why the CS wheels are as light as they are [or appear to be].

Hi Fred , Porsche probaby just went to the cast aluminium "design 90 " as the standard( Porsche family) look, for simple cost reasons on the 944S2 , 951 , 928GT , 964 C2 & C4. , meaning cast wheels are relatively cheap to make in mass production & a bit of silver metalic paint on top & there is the finished wheel ( in the tens of thousands ), just like all the wheels on new Porsche's today , high quality cast wheels , much cheaper for mass production
But the story doesn't end there , the above models had options where an owner could buy from Porsche much more expensive " optional extra wheels " , like they still do today
For example }
944 S2 1989 to 1991 , these came standard with the cast design 90's , but these cars had the anodized Fuchs forged wheels as an option , they looked just like the 928S4 ( manhole covers ) but with different offsets ( 7"X 16" X 52.3offsets front )
Then to make it more complicated , the 944S2 could be purchased with the M030 option( 1990>) , that meant the M030 suspension , sway bars , bigger front brakes & a different stub axle ( spindle ) , this meant different wheel offsets were needed for the 944S2 , so the design 90's were fitted ( 7.5" X 16" X 65mm front offsets ) from the 1990 951
951 1988 & 1989 Turbo S had the Fuchs forged Club Sport wheels as standard ( 7 "X 16" 65mm offsets at front ) , but from 1990 to 1991 the 951 had the cast design 90's in the same widths & offsets as a 928GT , meaning ( 7.5" X 16" X 65mm offset on the fronts ) but no tyre pressure sensor holes
The earlier Fuchs Forged & anodized Club Sport wheels just became an expensive option
964 C2 & C4 , the standard wheels were the cast design 90's , but there was the expensive option of the Fuchs forged wheels ( again they looked like the S4 wheels ) 6" X 16 X 52.3 off sets front & 8" X 16" X 52.3 off sets rear
And this is just scratching the surface the interesting world of wheels that Porsche used

Three Wheelin'
Red, hope you don't mind a related CS rim question.
I have scored a local pair of CS rims this Fall. Albeit fronts at 7" (951..) and 9" (928..) rears, they are truly stunning. My 993 18 twists are chromed (not my choice) and starting to leak... ugh.
Question is, what are my option for tires. 245/45 are sparse, 225's plentiful . Any reasonable +1 sizes that work for CS rims folks like??
Thanks!
