@smsarchitects - I don't know how many US market 1980 cars were paint-to-sample, and I've never seen that German language paint code sticker on any car, let alone a US market car. So the short, imprecise, answer is 'not many'.

what I’m wondering is how many that year had this color tag. if you have that information I would be be most appreciative.
thank you.

This tag is not consistent with a 928, nor is its location or the way it is fixed to the car. Also, the codes are certainly not factory made.

But, the paint code 635 was used for 1974-1978 911s and the colour was called ANTHRACITE GREY METALLIC and seems to match your car.

Makes me think that the original sticker was removed/missing and the owner, not realising what was correct, got an incorrect aftermarket plate and guessed where it should go. Has it had a repaint?

Thank you for decoding. CO2 - 49 state US market. Was there a California market option? I am considering buying this 1988 in 2024...it has catalytic convertors so I "assumed" it would pass smog. Now that I see C02 on the VIN decoder, does that mean it may not be ideal for Ca Emissions?

On the S4's there's one tiny difference in the routing of the emissions vacuum lines on the bottom of the lower intake plenum between the California cars and the rest of the US market cars. I have no idea what difference it makes but I doubt it is/was meaningful. For smog purposes all US market 928s are the same, the C02 (49 state market) vs. C03 (Cali market) distinction is meaningless. I use C03 cars as a proxy for them having less chassis corrosion but likely more interior UV damage. Pick your poison.
