APologies, I didn't respond to your query- I don't have any new, more specific info on your VIN (or any of the '81s, for that matter). Starting in '82 the dataset was more complete but '78-81 still lack the engine and transmission code details so I'm still inferring those from whether the transmission listed is G (manual) or A (auto).

There are only two cars that end with 862527, both of which are US market cars, one from 1984 and one from 1986. Is it possible that the car in question is a US market car and the person is reading the VIN off the stamping on the top of the right front frame rail? If it is a US car the VIN would be WP0JB0926GS862527.
RE: an S4 intake on S3 heads, I think the port spacing is the same but the port shapes are significantly different and so airflow would be a bit of a mess.
