Has anyone ever seen a factory system, in good condition, where when the alarm was tripped for the FIRST time, it let the belt to be loose enough to make it jump a tooth?
It is interesting that the Audi set up used to be called "better" and now it changed to "more modern". So the lack of data IS changing things after all.
Sean you got to lay off the personal attacks, foul laungage and belittling od those that don't agree with you. It's a tactic that you've been using on those that you decided to take some sort of revenge on. You've been doing this a lot in OT and since I'm on your ****list, me too. It ain't working, you loose credibility everytime you make that things personal.

This usually happens between Carl and Gregg. I am surprised it is happening between others.
I am guessing this thread will be closed soon. Before that why don't we get back to the original conversation and stop this pissing contest.
We come here for help and conversation, not drama.
Okay, rant over

Go tell your boyfriend to watch his personal attacks and I won't do the same back to him. You are on my **** list for a number of reasons, all pertaining to giving bad advice and being as decisive as I am today. If you don't like it then do yourself a favor and don't respond to me. The only reason I've not put you in ignore is I find amusement in most of your posts. Whatever other reasons you "think" you have about how I respond to you are in your head. I have no need to get revenge on anyone as I like most everyone here. You and 69, I do not like in the slightest. I could care less what that does to my "credibility" with you guys. BTW, how would you know about Off Topic, you've not paid for a membership in years and if I recall, you need to be a member to see that.

I have never personally attacked you or anyone else on this forum ever. You on the other hand do. I am not sure how you can possibly think that doing that advances any credibility you have.

I'm not going to apologize for calling someone acting like a ******** a ********. Or someone who shows in inordinate amount of dumb, stupid.

There is nothing to be heated about, except the personal attacks. We have two good options, and folks ought to be able to make a choice without being criticized for it.
Both tensioners work fine, and neither will let the engine survive seized water pumps, broken cam hubs, etc. The PKT tensioner is made by NTN in Japan, and is not a "magic" device-- it has a spring to provide tension, and a piston, oil and a checkvalve to provide damping. The factory tensioner has a stack of bimetal spring-washers and an adjuster to provide tension, a piston, oil and a checkvalve to provide damping. The NTN spring rate is low enough that it is self-adjusting, but that means it also needs serious damping. The bimetal washer stack of the Porsche tensioner provides temperature compensation, there is also some spring action but the spring rate is very high, so the damping function is not critical.
The bottom line is that they both work, and are different ways to accomplish the same thing-- maintain reasonable belt tension over a wide range of operating conditions. One is self-adjusting (but still needs periodic inspection) but has no alarm, the other is manually adjusted (and still needs periodic inspection). And neither is perfect.
What seems important is that folks get to make their choice based on all the facts. Roger, I respect you greatly and count you as a good friend, but to call the factory tensioner "antiquated" and assert that this problem, whatever it turns out to be, couldn't possibly happen with a PKT, is just silly. Anything can fail, including PKT's.
I have no dog in this debate, but after taking a very hard look at the design of both the factory tensioner and the PKT, I've come to the conclusion that the best choice for us, and how we maintain and use our cars, is the factory tensioner. It's hard to argue with 35 years of history, and I've come to the conclusion that the alarm is pretty important to us. That doesn't mean that I think folks who make a different choice are wrong, far from it-- everybody needs to figure out what is important to them.

The antiquated tensioner system is in my humble opinion exactly that. Does it work - yes sort of!!! Needs at least annual maintenance and checks.
Had my car been fitted with a PKensioner none of the above (first post) would of happened.
Had my car been fitted with a PKensioner none of the above (first post) would of happened.
Had my car been fitted with a PKensioner the light would not have come on for belt flutter. Simple and nothing else inferred. Did you take the time to read my first post or thought I was referring to all the other "situations" in this slightly out of control thread 8>)

I recall 10 or so years ago some of the flame wars made this look like two kindergartners fighting over a cookie.
Most of those threads were not just closed, but eradicated from existence and more than a few people banned for life.
Not by me (at least not based on what has been posted so far).
Threads like this tend to pop up every January - March. I attribute it to cabin fever setting in.
Lord knows I'm a few hairs away from typing a nonsense, repeated phrase over and over on my typewriter......
As for everyone playing along in this thread - keep it technical and above the belt. Please?
Up next, why don't we discuss the physics around using a leaf-blower and an umbrella to power a skateboard:
