Default Save Your Money- Cam Timing Gears

Just received my re-coated cam timing gears back from Finish Line Coatings in Oregon. Given that it was $45 per gear for a dry film lubricant finish on the gears, it is a long stretch to get to the $400 per gear if you replace them.

I could not be happier! They look amazing! And they permanently marked my gears with distributor rotor placement and cam timing reference points.

The can of paint was about that with shipping, so its more economical to buy a small oven and do it at home.

Maybe it's my imagination (or because you posted a beautiful high-res macro picture...) but I think I can see on 4-5 of the teeth where there is some mild cupping of the recoated teeth where the belt was riding (?). I'd certainly use those gears but I'd be interested to see if the coating holds up as well (or as evenly) as it would on a new set of gears. Not that I'd sandblast a new set of gears and get them coated, just for the sake of the experiment......

I've done a few things with Cerakote, an equivalent film coating. BC, the problem is most folks will buy the product, use it once and throw it away after 4 years on the shelf in their garage. But, I do agree, for the DIY guy it isn't that hard. You will need an airbrush with proper low pressure airflow and some practice.

Unless the new coating and edges of the ridges make you lose a belt and then $$$$

not for me

Given the life expectancy of a new belt I replace all the gears, water pump install a Porkensioner and have great peace of mind it doesn't require anything further for a very longtime......YMMV

I would probably.
I've seen a LOT worst than that and the belt was still there.
A quick check after few thousand miles and you're good.

+1 .... the wear on the tops of the teeth would make me nervous ... and there's a bit too much at stake with a 32V to take a chance ... for me.

The new aftermarket cam gears that Roger sells are pretty well priced IMO, and you support alternative parts sources, which leads to other cheaper alternatives being offered, win win.
