It looks like my agreement to buy a very nice '91 S4 has been reneged upon by the vendor, so I'm back to looking

I'm after a low mileage (<50k, preferably ~30k miles) '91 928S4. I don't mind some deferred maintenance, but interior and exterior condition are key. Just about any exterior colour except white. I want a black dashboard with either black (preferred) or tan leather. I'd prefer original throughout.

I was going to pay $20k, but will pay more if it's justified. Will consider cars across the US.

Thanks,

Roger

So an 88 and white is completely out of the question? I am restoring one right now.

rnixon,

it's older than you want, but really nice and half the price. I'm tempted.

Just curious, why do you want a 91' over the other years of S4? Is there something specific about it (airbags, PSD, roof antennae, etc.)?

Regards

Why is the interior pic flipped around?

Sorry, but white isn't my thing. I'm also looking for much lower miles.

Thanks,

Basically, it's to get the latest and greatest (in terms of development) without paying silly GTS money. I do prefer the 90+ steering wheel, even if old airbags have their issues.

Thank you for all the replies and PMs. I'm still looking, and still focused on a '91 S4.

Merry Christmas,

Roger

A higher mileage well looked after car is way better than a low mileage car with "deferred maintenance", especially with the 928's!

There seem to be two schools of thought there. A low mileage car with the recommended services seems like a good bet to me. There are issues with seals drying out if it hasn't been used regularly, but you also get very little wear. Interior work seems particularly expensive. I do like the idea of driving a car 3-4k miles a year for 10 years and still having under 80k miles total.

Given how much I know I will spend on maintenance, an extra $10k on the purchase price doesn't seem over the top. It buys ~70k miles of wear-related costs - not a lot per mile really.

I had agreed to buy a 1991 S4 with 27k miles, but the seller went back on his word , after I'd paid for a comprehensive PPI (after which he shook hands on the deal) and bought some 928-specific items. That car had several fluid leaks, but I've never seen another that had so little wear or drove so well.

I know of an extremely nice 91 S4 within your price budget. Exterior and interior are MINT, black interior.
The car is white though.

I do have to say, white isn't my favorite either, but it does seen to work on this car in person. Pictures do not work.
If you're interested I will put you in touch with the owner.

'90/'91 are VIRTUALLY identical you know... So, you should be looking at '90 and '91 MY cars and I understand your concern about interior and exterior condition and wanting the best. $20k should get you in to a 50k mile S4 in superior condition. It probably won't be enough to get you in to a 30k mile range car though.

Stand your ground and keep looking. The right car will surface...eventually!

Personally I'd rather have a well kept 100k-ish mile GTS for a few bucks more ANY DAY over an S4...
