As a few of you know, I built a 928 track car with an 442ci LSX motor, an EMCO sequential transmission with a ProShift PS3 Paddle Shift system, including an auto-blipper, and a modified C6Z diff and axles.
After we got everything working on my car, the guys at Benson Brothers Racing and I started looking around for another "never been done before" project.
In their shop was a one-off tube frame Camaro that had a mild NASCAR motor with a G-Force GF4A 4-speed dog box. We thought it would be really cool to figure out how to convert that box to a paddle shifter with the auto blipper. While we aren't quite ready to show the inner workings of the transformation, we did some video for our own purposes and posted it to youtube at:
Shifts are somewhat longer than they will be when the system is fully programmed. The car is a prototype 2010 Camaro tube frame built by Benson Bros. Racing in the Carson City, Nevada area. It uses an MSD CDI ignition that cuts power to the coil through a relay. We anticipated some difficulties with this ignition due to the fact that CDIs are either on or off. Normally, we can ramp power back in to factory and aftermarket ECUs, which virtually eliminates backfire on upshifts. We were surprised at how well the system worked and only noticed minor backfire. Once the cut times are reduced, we expect CDI type ignitions will perform almost as well as ECU controlled ones.
Additionally, the full length eight ball shifter will be replaced with a much shorter one, as it would only be used occasionally.
Another benefit of a paddle system is that it will ultimately convert a shuffle steering driver to one that keeps his hands pretty much in one place.
A full video presentation is currently being edited for release in a week or two.

I must admit, that's pretty cool. However, once you have a car that shifts and rev matches on its own, what exactly is the point in having a clutch verses a torque converter? Second question, how long until Google has a car that will drive itself around the race track? Self driving Ferrari's seem inevitable at this point. Even worse, self aware Ferrari's will likely follow. Then we will all be enslaved.
