Default shaving wheels to fit

I am currently looking to add a Ferrari to my stable. In checking out optjons over at Fchat I noticed a few references to guys shaving wheels to change offsets. I never heard of this and wanted to raise that here since offsets are a problem (limited availbility) with front wheels on 928's. Anyne know more about "shaving" wheels?

simple answer is dont do it
it will weaken the seating area of the wheel and thus wheel integrity will always be a question..

Find the best offset you can and fit the wheels

I highly doubt 5 to 8mm of shaving would hurt anything. I'm very connected with the guys at PacRim.com
Let me check with them on exactly how much you can do safely.

I'm with Stan on this ... but if you're hell bent on doing it don't speak to anyone but your insurance company .. and get it in writing.

Some aftermarket wheels have much more material than factory sets. They are also very likely made from softer stuff which means there really should be more. In any case at least pair of Mille Miglia 8.5x18 Cup II copies have hold together when some 3mm was taken from them. Its same thing as making 10-11" wide rear wheels by welding together pieces from two separate wheels. It can be done but there is always that nagging feeling at the back of the head when driving. What if...

I'm also in the please don't corner.

FYI
The fChat thread wheels appear to be redrilled as well as machined meaning the amount of material clamped between the bolt and hub is probably unchanged.

Porsche wheels typically have offsets in the low 50's range to get where the 928 needs offset you would have to lop off 10mm? Take a look at the area where the wheel nut seats- usually there is not a lot of meat there at all.

Sounds to me that you might be able to gain a couple of mm if you were so inclined but what is that worth?

Do Ferrari wheels have a flange?

Regards

Fred

To get a Porsche front offset changed enough to make it worth it the wheel would be completely compromised.

Welding wheels is totally different. I've seen that done well and would trust them.

FWIW standard wheel offset for the 928 is ET 65.

The lower the ET the further out from the hub face the wheel edge will be.

IE front wheel ET 50 is about the max you can go before trammeling and fender rubbing occurs and this also has to factor in front tire size

I don't like the idea of shaving a factory (think OLD) wheel....928's come with very high offsets....not really needed

What about leaving the wheel as is and taking a few mm off the brake rotor hat?

Mentioned purely out of curiosity, and I don't think its good idea on any car that is more driven than looked at.

I took .080 off the face of my rear rotors to improve clearance..... it did not weaken them at all. On my 1st set of Fikse wheels they had spacers mounted to the fronts with countersunk hardware to achieve the needed offset. if the work is done well it isn't an issue. I know many people that have widened wheels by cutting and welding in wider sections.... no problems....
