Default Better automatic for the S4?

Hey guys,

I have tried a few searches here and on Google to no avail. I was curious if the 4 speed Automatic Merc tranny is the only thing going for the 928 S4? Are there any other transmissions that can be substituted? A more modern 5 speed or even 6 speed perhaps?

I hate when someone pulls beside me wanting a race when I am already in the "soft" spot in 2nd gear. And I really don't want kick-down switches littering the inside of the car, nor do I want to drive the auto like it's a stick with no clutch. I want this car to be a GT cruiser, and behave like a Vette when I matt the pedal. (And don't tell me to get a 'Vette, you know what I am trying to say.) :P

Anyway, I was just curious if this is something that has been done. Thanks!

You don't need to buy the whole Corvette, just the transmission

Dinsdale has succesfully installed a C5 6 spd manual in his 82 supercharged car (928 motor) and just finished installing a C5 Z06 6 spd manual in the Just Peachy project (LS3 motor). He is now looking to do a C6 6 spd (6L80) auto. T

The 87 has the tall 2.20 rear end....the later autos have the 2.54 rear end and are much more lively at lower speeds!

Ah! That's good news. Thanks for the replies and links!

Iceman, that must be the reason my car feels a bit lazy!

Jason,

If you have a US spec 2.2 then you are going to feel sluggish. Our S4's with 2.54 can feel sluggish as well but you can wake them up a bit. The first trick is adjust the kickdown - stock setting if I remember corrrectly is to align the cup against its seat and slacken off the adjuster 3 turns. If that is correct and that is where yours is adjusted to then tighten it about 4 turns from where it is now. You should find it will take off in first when you wind the throttle on.

I also have mine with the kickdown switch by passed- I cannot live with the car in kick down mode even with the tighter kck down. With the by-pass, I set the kickdown cable so that it will still cruise along in top gear with the throttle lightly pressed but anything more and it will change down. Not sure how that works with a 2.2 but you should try it at least.

Then when you have done that give either Victor, Carl, Dave R or Murf a call if you have some pocket money to spare.

Regards

Fred

It makes me wonder, how is the gas mileage on those cars with a expanded automatic in gears?

I always wondered about the Merc 5 Speed 722.5 (with electronically controlled 5th overdrive gear) replace a 722.4?

I actually saw my 1988 S4 automatic on a workbench right next to the 722.5....visualize the rear end gone and an "extra" 4-5" for the 5th gear at the tail end of the trans...I asked the shop that rebuilt my S4 trans if it could be done...the answer was yes, but you won't like the bill
