Dave,
It is awfully awkward to drop trans and rear cross member as a unit.
The way I've settled-on in the home shop is disconnecting axles from transmission, but leaving them attached at hubs.
Chain-up trans. Drop rear suspension with axles and shocks attached.
Then drop trans and TT as a unit.
I use a rolling stool beneath the bell housing, setting the front of TT on that stool as its lowered. Then I just roll trans (on jack) and TT/stool out from beneath the car.
Ditto on Stan's comment about removing pinch bolt.

I was wondering just how awkward, that would be if I left it attached and used the cross member to lower the assembly.

Here is the long Shot of the TT all loose, also I picked up one of these Milwaukee 3/8 Ratchet, great Lithium Battery life and great for spinning off nuts and bolts, I've been using it all summer and it is my favorite go to tool, I take it w/ me w/o the charger.
Thanks for all the replies, and thanks Kurt for the Links.

No Really, it's is REMOVED
I stopped by Auto Parts place on way home and picked up a nice clean oil drain container so I could re-use the Tranny fluid ~2k miles on the Dex VI at over $6.00 / qt well enough said.
Than I reread Bill Ball's Torque Tube Removal w/o Trans drain and suspension drop and said what hec, I'll try to lower the Front of the TT and work the Bell / TT angles (I did move the Trans a bit forward just to be sure not to pinch the Trans Fluid Reservoir on the Rear Cross member.
Well the bell came off and so did the Flex plate, off to HF I went to get a longer 1/2" drive extension and larger 1/2" breaker bar.
The Torque Converter bearings seem fine, and I had no leaks, going to rebuild the TT and slam it back in, just in time for the DE on the 19th
I'm elated to say the least, no cuts, no drains, no errors (so far)
Thanks for the support,
Dave

It's Bill Ball's way and a BIG thank you to Bill for his write up !
This thread title went off topic, so I'll repost but you just want to change the TT bearings on a Auto it can be done.
Just remove the trans bolts and e break off rear suspension and move it back, follow Bills instructions and lower the front of the TT and work the bell, take the bell and flex plate off .

I'll be driving the Blue, I still have to dissemble, clean the TT and install the BLack Sea R&D Super bearing, so the "Onion" won't be back on the road till Saturday / Sunday at best, as I won't be working on her tonight.
See you and that nice Euro tonight,
Dave

There should be NO PROBLEM replacing the TC cover bearings with the tranny left in place, just slid back on the crossmember. The thing you positively cannot do in an S4 and that resulted in me removing the tranny is replacing the TC seal. That requires removal of the TC itself, and there is not enough room to do that in the S4. Some have done it in S3 models, as those have a smaller TC.
The only caveat, as Stan mentioned in an earlier message is that when you pull the cover, make sure the TC does not come out with the cover. The center boss on the TC sometimes sticks in the cover and pulls out with it. this will damage the seal and result in having to pull the tranny completely to repair it. If you watch this carefully through the flexplate bolt holes and perhaps insert a small prybar in there to encourage separation of the TC/flexplate from the cover, bearing replacement is doable without damaging the seal.
I've had no problem doing the TC cover bearings, tranny left in the car, in several S4s. Just don't try to remove the TC. It's a no-go.
CATCHING UP ON THE SUBSEQUENT MESSAGES IN THE THREAD, I SEE YOU GOT 'ER DONE.
Here's my original write-up, many moons ago...

The flex plate flange beatings (aka torque converter bearings) are standard size bearings available at every bearing supply shop. They are $20 each and two arr needed for each car.

Yes thank you once again Bill and for posting the links!
I was wondering about removing the TQ unintentionally and this clears it up for me too.
So if you want to do the TQ Bearings, un-bolt the TQ Flex Plate from the TQ (through the TQ cover access holes) and remove the TQ Flex Plate with the TQ Cover, leaving the TQ in place, got it.
Thanks Bill,
Dave

When I remove my tranny and TT again shortly I hope this "mod" (photoshopped here) that Ive done on mine will make things a bit more workable/easy. Been that way for the last 5 yrs.
6 flexplate bolts at the front and drop the tranny/TT assembly straight down
good work..this is a pretty awkward job to do, no matter what the equipment you have. Its a heavy assembly to lug from under the car!
