Default Idle micro switch ?

Just noticed that the idle micro switch on the 84 was loose and not being activated with throttle closed, I have adjusted it. I got rushed out by the Wife before I could test drive but could this be a reason why the RPM's drop so quickly between shifts ?

fsharp9. The idle switch is I think supposed to lower injector pulse width with throttle closed. think it helps prevent backfiring from to much fuel to air ratio. I think that's called overrun. Maybe the PO did loosen the mounting for some reason. Test the switch operation w/ multi meter. should be open ckt when operated and closed ckt when not operated. f#9 makes me think you're a music man?? I forgot to ask if it was the upper or lower switch?

I noticed the same on my 84 (microswitch not engaged at idle). I haven't gotten around to messing with it yet. How did you manage to adjust it? Was it necessary to remove the spider or can the screws be reached with a long screwdriver?

hb253. Very easy to adjust with short screw driver. With throttle closed just raise up on the switch body until you see a closed ckt using a test lite or ohm meter.

I used a long screwdriver and removed the drivers intake tube

After an hour or two of cleaning/treating the seats with Lexol, I took a quick look at the microswitch setup again. I might have been able to get a super-stubby screwdriver in there when I was 5 years old, but not now. Looks like I'll need to remove at least one intake tube and even then, it's looking "interesting".

no need to pull the runner. It's tight but a stubby worked for me. No kids in your area with small hands?

When the idle switch is closed (off-throttle) and the engine RPM is above ~1200 IIRC, the L-Jet shuts off the injectors to save fuel, that way when you coast down a hill in gear you aren't burning any gas and you get an engine braking effect. Once engine RPM falls below ~1200 RPM the L-Jet fires up the injectors so the engine doesn't stall.

The popping on overrun was what I wanted to fix. Today, I finally got around to adjusting the switch. You guys were right, a long screwdriver (along with removing the air intake tube) was sufficient to loosen the screws, move the switch and then tighten. A test drive confirmed that popping on overrun no longer happens.

FSharp9, I didn't notice any change in behavior in RPM drop betweem shifts, so I would say your issue is probably unrelated.
