Managed to get a little work in on the tank strap. Had the typical rust issues. Welded in some new steel which was a b$%ch to fabricate. I finished the job with trunk bed coating. I usually try to stay as original as possible in appearance but this item takes a lot of abuse......

Looks great! The tank strap was the first thing I did on mine, before I found this site or thought about taking pics...looked great until my tank leaked and the gas ate the paint all up...

Umm Yeah...that accumulator is show and IS contributing to your stall out. Fuel system is not holding pressure thus causing the stall situation.

Yep, it was replaced a month ago. Old one held pressure for about 1 hour or so, new one holds pressure for hours on end.

Didn't solve my issues, that will hopefully be solved by......well.....new everything

Cleaned the CIS assembly and installed the rebuilt FD, new gasket and new o-rings. I am going to do all the VAC lines and reinstall the spider and fuel lines tomorrow. Hoping to have it running this weekend again!

Looks nice. Remember there is a filter in the fitting between the incoming fuel line and the FD. I don't see it in your pics so I'm guessing it did not go to the rebuilder. Yours could be plugged or punched out. If it is either one you might think about replacing it right away. Be a shame to run a bunch of crud into your nice clean FD. Roger and Mark have them, I think.

Thanks Guys!

I hit a small stumbling block......my new fuel pump is fried. It ran dry apparently due to a blockage. The only thing that I left original was the in tank pump, I thoroughly cleaned it (ultrasonic). I also tested it prior to install but something must have limited its flow. When I disconnect the pump, the rubber hose from the internal pump flows fuel but not a very good rate.

I have just ordered BOTH new pumps. Anyone have the part number for the small inline filter to the FD, I am missing mine and following Karl's advice, its a small measure of insurance.

Waiting another week

Installed new in tank pump and another new exterior fuel pump. This makes the entire fuel system brand new.
Started right up, ran decent. I let it idle for around 30 minutes. Came up to temperature nicely. Revs good. Two issues:
--Idles a bit rough, as if it has a miss BUT it did smooth out quite a bit once warm
--Oil breather puts out a lot of fumes, this doesn't worry me too much as I am sure the rings need to be seated.

I am going to run it a lot more this week and see how it clears out. I will then move to ignition (plugs have been replaced).

New FD had no issues, no leaks and car revved very freely and smooth. The difference is night and day! The intake/vacuum and FD project was well worth it!!

Drove it in and out of the garage on its on power. My back likes it!
A really good day over all!!

Managed to get the car around the block quite a few times today. Made it to third gear. It did well considering this is the first drive since 2003. Couple of observations:

Speedo doesn't work

Runs a little rough

Holds a very, very low idle

I pulled the Instrument cluster for cleaning and rebuild. I also noticed that while I have a cruise control switch, it is not wired up, the harness is taped up and it looks factory.

It was good to get it driving. It runs like it has miss. Temp is basically even in all cylinders so all should be firing normally. I may try to adjust to idle a bit as the stuff is all installed "out of the box" and has never been set up properly.

I also have a cold oil leak from what I assume is the passenger side cam seal. It seems to go away once warm.

Progress!!!!

I hunted down a couple minor vacuum leaks then set the timing, idle and AF mixture. Car now starts instantly and runs smoothly. Holds nice idle, really purrs!

I rebuilt the cluster and installed today. Looking real good all lit up!!

Awesome news regarding it purring Guy, you do great work.
The cluster looks great.

What did you have to do to the cluster?
Cluster tech is always a interest to me.

Thanks, Matt. This is my third 928 cluster rehab, gets easier each time. I will see if I can add some images tomorrow but here is the rundown. It helps that I have spares available.

All contacts cleaned. I use some contact cleaner and a small scotchbrite pad. I reglue (superglue) any loose contacts around plug ends and bulbs.

Any broken contacts repaired with defrost grid repair paint when needed

Continuity checked on all contacts

Bulbs checked/replaced.

Odometer gear replaced

"Telltales" for gauge warning replaced with upgraded white assemblies

Lens polished and removed from black bezel (to allow bezel to be painted)

Bezel lightly sanded and painted satin black

Reflectors removed and "chrome" tape used to add reflectivity

Chrome tape used on insides of bulb hoods (makes huge improvement) see image

These printed circuits are getting really fragile and brittle with age. I handle with extreme care!!

Someone really needs to reproduce these printed circuits. While there are multiple clusters, it seems that three or four printed circuits would cover the majority of 79-87 models IIRC
