Holiday Inns are so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend staying there.

Interestingly, in this spectacular thread, https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...pacer-kit.html, Carl was originally recommending only the one gasket, and JBWeld or Hondabond between the block and spacer. No explanation for the switch, but the instructions (and the kit, since it comes with two cork gaskets) call for using two. Who am I to ignore instructions...

Well if it's a kit, surely the instructions will tell you exactly what starter to fit and how! If not, what kind of kit is that? For a push-start start 928? ;-)

The starter came from Carl; it's the IMI hi-torque mini starter that was often discussed here. Sadly, very little in the way of instructions provided.

Here's the pan spacer instructions; the sandwich is on p.3 (downloaded image is too large to attach)

Could you post the second picture you sent me, with the relief cut out in the pan to facilitate the small head allen bolt for the top starter bolt? I think I'd have to take even more material out than you had removed though, as Mike is using a cork gasket between the spacer and pan, not Hondabond as your car appears to have.

Oh, I thought you got this from Greg Brown. I also have made them in the past. I have no idea what you have and what it will take to seal. If it were mine or Greg's, it would seal just fine with case sealant.
It's a shame to have to reinvent this process.

I was in touch with Greg originally but none of the other bits I needed to complete the kit were available from anywhere (pre 82 oil pick up, screen, cloverleaf); Based on the thread I linked to before, I'm guessing these spacers are all basically the same (other than the instructions!)

After talking to Greg Brown, it's on my todo list also. Interesting problem with the starter. Good to know before getting into it.

Anyone have an early oil pan and pick up laying around? Van volunteered his, but we'd have to remove it from his car first. Would be easier (and less likely to mess up a fine car) if someone had one available.

Do you also need the early pan?! They look identical as far as I can tell. I reused my 88 pan. Had no indication I needed anything else.

The 88 pan will work, it's just the early oil pans seem to have a better design for the oil sump and pickup.

Is there any actual evidence of the old-style pan and pickup working better than the new-style pan and pickup? I don't have any contrary evidence, and certainly it looks like the old-style setup is more expensive to make so it's plausible that they went to the new style for cost control reasons. Just that I'd like to see some data on this if someone's got data.

Hard for me to have any real data, since I don't have an early oil pan to test. Probably have to check with the people that have used both, but I sure it'd be hard to get any empirical data, since there are usually more then one variable in most real world engine builds.

With Dennis's 88 S4 we ground a relief area as shown in the photo in Hai's post above. This wasn't a big deal.
