Fan Kit: Anyone use these guys?
My S4 shroud is a mess, and because Facebook is smart..I finally got an ad on there that interested me.

My stock fans _work_..but Id really like to claim back a few inches of space that the OEM shroud and fans take up back there, as well as a whole shroud again.

A double 11" fan system from SPAL is around $200 in USA, requires a little fabrication to fit, certainly not nearly $400 worth of work.
Can somebody explain to me what length of time a "lifetime warranty" covers please? Not specifically to this fan system, but generally. Personally I think they are a con. I read it as meaning "warranted to work until it stops, when its lifetime is up".

Might want to look into the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique V6 radiator fans. They are very close fit to a 928, others have used it and since it's OE, you know the quality is there.....and they can be found everywhere (new or used).

Imo: Using the ford shroud too?
Amongst about a billion other shortcuts, the Porsche shroud was 'modified' to go in and out without undoing the side cooler lines. It'd be nice if the ford shroud...saved the same hassle.
I'll search on those.

I ordered one a little more than three weeks ago; still hasn't arrived, but they quote around three weeks, built to order. The warranty is for use with one car, they require a VIN at purchase. They have sales, my price was a hundred less.
As for the kit from SPAL, I have no idea, but V12s has its sales pitch regarding all of its components, besides its aluminum shroud and claimed ease of installation.

$35 for a Contour V6 fan from my local u-pull junkyard, $8 for one rattle can of satin black, $50 to $120 for a fan controller.
I haven't heard any Contour fan user have any problems.
$163 or $598.00 plus shipping. For me the choice is pretty clear. The worst part about it is that the Contour fan has to come out from the bottom - it is pretty much impossible to pull it out from above.

From that site...."Porsches don't need fans above 35mph"
Mine does.
Jeff:
I have a BRAND NEW Ford Contour fan set up that I don't need. Yours at cost.

I designed a cooling fan system years ago that was probably overkill for most applications. It has two 2950cfm fans with a smart controller but it seems that the populas isn't interested in a fan system that costs about the same as a factory replacement even if it flows twice as much...
I do still have shrouds available and can still get all the components but the price is $698 which seems to scare off most people. I sold quite a few, enough to pay back the development cost. I am building another one for my newly aquired 86.5' 5 speed driver, I could build another one if needed...

Post #26 has a picture. It works great with a twin screw system but not with current centrifugal supercharger systems.

Jeff: It's Dorman 620-104. It's pretty thin.
Dimensions: 27 x 6 x 20 inches. I'm surprised it says 6" deep. I can take a look at it directly tomorrow.

Jeff,
You can also look at the Spal 12 inch dual fan system. I think you can pick these up for around $270. I butchered the stock fan mount to make a top assembly- I note Carl now does one of these. Needs a bit of fiddling to make it fit but quite easy to work. Had no problems to date with it -still works well after 5 years.
The only issue we noted was that it seems one of the fans is weather/dust proof and the other is not for some amazingly stupid reason. The fan itself shrouds the motor quite well anyway. Replacement motors are nigh on impossible to come by but considering that one stock fan motor replacement costs about the same as the job lot not a big deal [that or you can by a single fan and use the motor unit from it]. This system when fitted has a very open profile and opens up the fan bay nicely.
Regards
Fred
