1987 S4 5 spd
I'm looking at one today, white on black, 5 spd, LSD, sport seats, original paint, 1 owner, garage kept. Owner says paint and interior are perfect. Last tb/wp in 1998.
30,000 Kms since 98.
Car has 180,000 km (110 k miles)
Apparently lots of service records.
Just wondering what I should offer, he is asking 15 k, but I think somewhere closer to 10k or 11k
Sounds like nicely kept example.

If everything is as the owner represents, it's easily worth his ask. Condition and maintenance-required drive these decisions. Let's say that a **perfect** S4 5-speed at that mileage is worth $20k (and probably more). I plug in my instant -$5k part-cost factor for needing every rubber piece on the car replaced, plus shocks and brakes, just to make it a safe reliable driver. Deduct from the -$5k for stuff that has actually been done and documented. Still, if cosmetics are excellent, mechanicals similar, the $15k ask is not out of line.
Think what it would take to get the average market-offered car up to excellent cosmetics with all maintenance current, factor the rarity of the 5-speed car, and this one sounds like a darn good buy at $15k.
JMHO of course. Plus many sellers' "excellent" or "mint" is often really "great condition considering the age and mileage", a completely different condition/standard usually closer to "average". YardsticK: If I'm mentally tallying the worklist for a car I'm looking at, it isn't 'mint' or "excellent". Doesn't mean it won't be considered, since a lt depends on a buyer's intentions.
I've looked at several cars for listmembers, and those folks will probably confirm my critical eye. Sometimes I miss stuff, like the hood dent on James M's '85 Euro project car during early inspection. Some cars are worth the effort in spite of those things, but are factored into the buying decision.
Hope to see better description and mayybe pics of the car you are looking at. Better too is having another set of financially-disinterested expert eyes inspect the car.

1987 5-speed is a great starting point for forced induction: knock sensors and the 9.4:1 compression. If that's what you got in mind, go for it!
I "overpaid" for mine and saved a bunch in net by having a car with the basic mechanicals working.

After I'm done with the repaint, interior re-do, and the mechanicals are complete, I'll have put well over 18K in my '91s4 in the last 4 years. 15K for an excellent body, interior and the 5K you'll probably hafta put in after his asking price puts you in better shape than I (and most of the rest of us) for a very desirable 928. Check it out with a complete PPI and if it looks good, jump on it.

There is a 1990 GT for sale near Sherbrooke (for a while now) for 17,900$. Condition unknown with 135,000 Kms. Probably negotiable.
Canadian market for our cars is not too good ....

She's mine. Could not pass this one up. The car is absolute mint, original paint not a single mark or a scratch, a few small stone chips on the bumper but that's it.
Interior perfect, all electrics work. Just one bad seat switch.
Timing belt and water pump done at 65k, (wp)117k, and 153k.
All service records back to 1987, it even comes with a log book detailing every single tank of gas and every event.
Car was drivin on hwy, long trips, 60 k in the first two years. Was once towed back from Stowe by the dealer for a clutch hose failure.
Original dealer year end sale flyer, 82,500 bucks.
I purchased it from the second owner, who got it from his neighbour when he passed away in 2006. Since then only 3k put on it.
No expense was spared with service on this car.
Attached are the service records, unfortunately the wife of the first owner shredded the original invoices. But this is all backed up by the hand written log book from her husband.
Holly **** is all I have to say.

Nice, you've got all the good options there! I've also got an 87 5sp with LSD and sports seats. I had Erkka do some research for me, and here's what he came up with:
712 LHD ROW 5sp made in '87 MY
429 has also LSD
79 has also sport seats
54 has also sport shocks
25 also do not have sunroof
3 has also seat heaters
I don't know if this applies to the Canadian cars, but only about 10% of the cars had sports seats, and combined with the 5speed and LSD, it's a pretty sporty and rare combo
Another thing I like about the early S4 is the lack of airbag and digital dash.
Nice catch!

Nice find! There are just too few cars left in this kind of condition. Keep it wonderful and it will reward you.
Of course, we'll need all the details as you bring everything up to date and safe.
