Question engine block rebuild order

I have tried looking in the search function to see if there is a specified order in which to rebuild and engine. I just installed the crank as per WSM and also the oil pump. Now my question is should I move to the pistons next or can I start working on the water pump and other areas.

I am waiting for my pistons to come back from being re-coated so if that is the next order of business, then I am in a holding pattern, but I would like to get things moving along.

I couldn't find anything, per se, in the WSM that specified and ordered sequence, nor in a rennlist thread search.

I work from the inside to the outside, although you will be fine putting the water pump on. I don't think you want to put the heads on before the cylinders though

Where are you having your pistons re-coated, and with what?

Markus from Blazak Motorsports in Kingston Ont is a 944 specialist. He did some honing on my block for me and suggested that I get the pistons recoated through his applicator. I do know that it is the specialty piston coating that is used on pistons in alusil blocks. Not sure what he is using, but he rebuilds 944 motors all of the time and also services and maintains some 928 s in his area.

No machining since block wasn't too bad. Just applying the special paste. to re-surface the cylinder walls

Unfortunately, this thread only came to light a couple of weeks ago. I had initiated the work a few months ago. I am still using the OEM stock pistons and not replacing with aftermarket as that thread was implying. Read through it again and it will become apparent that they were discussing aftermarket pistons etc.

This forum is invaluable and has helped and saved me numerous times before doing something stupid. However, i have to admit, sometimes it can scare me to the point of inaction due to contradictory comments. I had to make a decision that I thought would best solve the problem at hand. This was a pro-active solution since I probably could have gotten by with how they were.

As the great sage, Tony Soprano from The Sopranos played by the late James Goldafini, once quoted "War has been lost more by indecision than wrong decision".

I had to make a decision and I made it to the best of my information availalbe at the time.

Let us know if the piston replating works. A lot of people will be interested in the detail, regardless of whether it works or not. ...but especially if it works.
