Seam welding a car is only necessary if the factory spot welds are popping or cracking. Has anyone seen a 928 do this? I have not.
The Porsche Factory doesn't seam weld any of the Cup Cars or the RSR's.
Why?
Seam welding a car that is galvanized is going to cause more problems than any good it will ever do.

If someone wants to race an older body style, I'd go for something newer than an OB. I'm having to change my engine and transaxle cross members in my '79 to accommodate the newer style engine mounts and BW tranny. I think if you started with an '81(?) you would already have the updated cross members to accommodate a 32v motor and later tranny if those are in your build plans.

I think the later engine mounts started later, like 83?

From a dollar perspective, getting a '79 to where an '83 already is in this regard is about an extra $850 (based roughly on 928 Intl pricing) for the newer style cross members and a rebuilt proper length torque tube. That's ( hopefully) a big chunk of your purchase price, so if you're choosing between an '83 or a pre '83, and the '83 is a little bit more, it might be worth paying the extra up front instead of potentially more later. Not a consideration of course if you're sticking with the 16v motor and early tranny.

More pointedly, has anyone ripped that rear lower arm bracket out of the body? The front lower bracket that was changed in the later body.

If used in concert you mean? That's true. The attachment points of cross members to the chassis are all the same right? It's the attachment points of the engine and tranny to the cross members that varies.

Yes, its very slight, and its on the side of the rear cross member only, as I recall. Nothing else changed over the entire production run from what I can tell.
