The trans am has 60k in miles on it-
Seriously for the amount I drove the 928 which really is prob 1500 miles a year maybe slightly more- Believe it or not - I just feel more confident and excited in the Trans am .
I mean every time I drove the 928- not that mine was a Junker by any means- as a matter of fact it was kind of pristine - I always found myself somewhat happily surprised when it would start when I turned the key - And if I could enjoy it the whole day without a light coming on was a good day. --just saying. and if it wasn't a light it was a smell or a sound - just my two cents.
Build quality - no doubt - BUT something does have to be said build quality vs owners experience.
I like my s550 but man my Lexus ls430 was a super tight contender and it NEVER EVER Saw the dealer!!! If it were up to my wife she would never own German- thank goodness she's not into cars.

Hey, nothing wrong with a Trans Am. I have fond memories of driving a friend's nearly-new '79 TA with the Oldsmobile 403 engine. For a youngster in the midwest who didn't even know how to say 'Porsche' that was a thrill.

That said, I wouldn't mess with a GTO. I was ready to trade my S4 in after a test ride until I about laughed at what the dealership offered for my shark. I still respect GTOs, but they "ain't got no style!"
Never drove a WS6, but have driven an older Z-06... reminded me more of AO, Barney or John Kuhns kind of pull. Our sharks might look great and do well in the twisties... short of major mods, they aren't going to beat the new hardware in a straight line.
Like they say, to each there own... but' I'll take a shark, thank you, for a whole bunch of reason not found on the stat sheets.

I know exactly what the OP means when he is worried about a 928 breaking down. Everyone would be laughing and it would be pretty embarassing. You don't need to worry about that with a TA because when it does breakdown no one will care or probably even notice.

Ah, I was disappointed that it didn't have the big turkey sticker on the hood.
Bad news, Joe... yer car's on FIRE!!!!
I have the same issue with one of my cars:

I know you purist would laugh if I told you that - That the TA also does VERY well on the turns and handles great - Probably cause of the wheel and tire set up. but very low- wide and light.

The 722.3 at least when installed in v8 MB's is designed to start in 2nd gear unless in kickdown. I company called bergwerks had a module that you could install to simulate sport / economy settings that was available on euro MB's with this transmission.
People in the MB circles who have installed this setup like it.

THere's a bevy of Camaros at the local dealership with the furrowed-brow hawkbill grill and screamin' chicken hood...terrible.
Loved them in their day, go Burt and Sally and snowman...wait, wonder what that handle was all about back then? Turned dash and all the cheez with the anemic 200 or so emission strangled HP....later models- turbo always intrigued me, couldn't get over the interiors though. Enjoy what you've got, anything can be fun and its all subject to 'slight enhancement' (anyone remember Ed Ruiz?)
BTW- had an '04 GTO....front ends/suspension is poor, LS1 is outstanding. Headers, quick reflash and well over 300 at the wheels. '05/06 LS2 would fare better with +50HP for 400 at the flywheel. And, supercharger kits readily available and well sorted for instant mid 400-550 HP depending. Not necessarily a looker without some work, but fat torque curve and fun platform to tinker with.
Now, when I had my '67 GTO...tripower...4 speed...lthe trick suspension setup in addition to the 1.5" diameter front swaybar (really) was to retrofit a-body A-arms (and discs) for improved geometry.
722.3-- according to factory literature 2nd gear start commenced as torque reduction strategy in '87 S4.

Congrats on your purchase. Our 73' Firebird Esprit is due to be out of the shop next week. Obivously it is not a 928 but neither are the maintenance costs at a 928 level. I still love 928's but with a retired guys income I can't keep one. Enjoy

Had an '81 Turbo Trans Am back in the day when it was fresh (aka 3 months old). Enjoyed the hell out of the car...was a looker...good performance, comfortable, lots of stuff to like about it and i did... BUT...unless memory serves me incorrectly, my "slow" '82 928 is a much better car than that was... in every single department i can think of.
To the OP...if you get bored with the TA you can always come back to a 928...and if you don't get bored its all good. Glad you are lovin your new ride.
Cheers
