Driver side mirror fell off
So I closed the drivers side door on my car today and the mirror fell off. Just the actual mirror, not any of the housing or anything. Fortunately it just sat there rather than fell to the ground so now I need to glue it back on? Any suggestions on what I should use to stick it back on?

I would suggest just about any flavor of Permatex silicone sealant,
wipe down both mating surfaces with alcohol,
then spread a thin coating on the glass,
place into the plastic mounting area.
Use some blue tape and a few sponges to press against the glass,
it takes about 2 days for the stuff to cure

Get some adhesive remover and clean the residue of double sticky tape and adhesive off both the mirror and the mirror frame. Then go to the auto glass shop and ask them for a few 2 inch circle pieces of double sticky tape discs and cut them so they cover most of the mating surface. Then stick the mirror glass back on. It will probably last another 25 years or so.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't suppose you know what this tape is called? Looking around at all the auto glass places in my area it looks like they are all just people working out of their house. Is this something they might have at an auto parts store?

Maybe. Let me look around in my stuff since I get these sticker things with mirror glass when I buy it on ebay or jsut get it from my auto glass guy.
Send me a pm with your mailing address and I'll mail you about three or four of them.

You can get the adhesive remover form you auto paint store. it is aobut $10 for a quart, but worth the cost since you can use if for all kinds or other adhesive removal tasks. Even if it goes to waste, the ten bucks is worth the savings of effort in getting the pieces clean.

I just looked through some of my car stuff and didn't find the stickers I mentioned. However, my Auto Glass Guy is one of us with an 89 S4, and I need to see him tomorrow about the Function and helping with the Independence ONE Car show for Saturday the 6th of July which will feature the Porsche 928, so I'll get a few of them from him and send you some in the mail, if you would like.

You can also try a hobby store that carries radio control stuff. They call it "Servo Tape" and use it to hold the servomotors in place.

I glued mine back on with RTV silicone rubber. While it is a pretty good glue, the mirror does vibrate. I would suggest an epoxy which does not have any "give" to allow vibration.

Read post #2. If you've got a tube of bathtub silicone sitting around, that would even work.
I think the people that made them for Porsche "licked" the back of the glass and stuck it on....virtually anything you do would be better than what they did.
I'd bet that I've had 10 of these fall off on test drives, or sitting in the shop, over the years. However, I'm not sure I've ever been as lucky as you....all the ones that I've had had fall off break when they hit the ground....

Been there -done that got the tee shirt!
The insert on my GTS aero mirror came undone a few months ago but I was luckier than Doc Brown in that it suddenly flapped around with just about nothing but fresh air holding it in place. Initially was somewhat taken aback thinking it was the entire assembly.
A word of caution, if you have S4 mirrors it is probably easier to fit, I used double sided tape and a well intended mechanic tried to put in back- and [slightly] missed the correct alignment - think we could get it undone?
Still, better than when I test drove a brand new Panamera- the entire guts of the driver side wing mirror flew out at xyz km/hr and impersonated a bongo drum on the door panel held onto the car by the loom! Not too impressive when it flew back on about the second iteration and clouted the window glass next to my head.To be fair, the whole lot slotted back in and worked and there was only minor scratching on the door.

Put me on the list for missing mirror.
My passenger one was loose last winter. I caught it before it flew away. Not so lucky this morning for my drivers side one though.
Called Sun Coast Porsche and having a new one delivered. $100 after shipping.

Just happened to me. The glass has plastic attached to it. Tried to snap it back in and i am not sure how to do it. looks like it snaps into the piece that moves around. the piece that you adjust the mirror to your liking.
