Thank all of you- esp FredR
- the post re: arcing with the battery cover-
Turns out there is originally a sheet of insulation between the battery and cover- also there are brackets to secure the battery to the bottom of the well- It turns out the battery was sitting on the brackets, being tossed around- Bill put battery in brackets, replaced insulation and voila- it starts-
Now- any suggestions re huge leak in R12 system- HOW TO CONVERT TO R134 WITHOUT SPENDING $2000+

The a/c conversion is not difficult. I had my hoses re-built, and there is a cut off point where later models had the better o-rings fittted- just ensure you are kmitted with these. One is black [earlier model?] and one is green [later model?]. Beyond that I would give the system a once through flush- with R134 to wash out any residues, vac it, oil with the "dual purpose" a/c oil, fill with 134. My system now uses R134 [originally R12] and I was able to revert back to R12 whne we temporarily found some with no problem. R12 seems to give better a/c performance but even with R134 it can handle outside temps to about 40C. Beyond that it then starts to struggle.
