Watched a rear wheel of my Saab Sonnett pass me in a turn once... These stories remind me bearings and rotors on all 4 this summer!

Had a front wheel bearing go out once on the highway on a 72 Camaro. The warning signs appeared a few minutes before it completely failed. The signs were the bearings flying out and making loud pinging noises. When it failed the steering went loose and veering.

Malcom glad your OK ,
the front end may need some parts
possibly a new hub and spindle along with new bearings,
make sure to check the inner and outer tierods for play.
When adjusting the bearings you want to take the flat washer and sand both sides on a flat surface so it will slide,
also do the nut mating surface.
then make sure the washer slides with the push of a screwdriver tip,
NOTE this isnt done by prying just pushing.
If the inner bearing mating surface is worn then the hub will have some some 12 to 6 play ,
dont be tempted to remove the play by tightening up the nut,
this will only preload the bearings such that they will run hot then fail

I was wondering what the warning signs might be. This is very reassuring.

When 18 was driving my muscle car. Made a turn over railroad tracks and the front kind of wobbled funny. Pulled into a service station 1 block down the street. This was back when there were full service service stations with lifts. Mechanic put it on the lift and went to shake the wheel. It came off in his arms. Bearings were gone and the spindle was scored and chewed up. Replaced the spindle, bearings, and cruised on.

Malcolm,
Have you done any services on those bearings since you've owned the car? In my limited and early amateur experience, I think I did more damage to good bearings than I ever helped with bad ones. Until I sat through an all-day bearing manufacturer's clinic on pump vibration and diagnosis, I'd definitely been doing mine less than perfect.

No, I have not serviced the wheel bearings since owning the car just over a year now. Be interested to know what you learned from the course you took.
