I couldn't agree more!
I coat the insides of my air box (above and below the filter) with a thin layer of grease, dabbed with a sponge to draw it into tiny 'dust catching' tendrils.
(A practice from off-road riding days).
Some years ago I used a K&N for about 10 days, including a track day.
Afterwards I checked the downstream grease layer and could feel fine grit embedded in grease. End of K&N for me.
I still use the grease layer (it catches lots of small stuff). In addition I use a thin layer of polyester 'wool' across the top of the filter to catch leaves, twigs, leaf litter, insects, grashoppers, small birds, slow children etc.
Otherwise this stuff clogs the pleats in the filter and obstructs airflow long before the paper media is clogged.
Polyester gauze:

IMHO if you live in a dusty environment use only paper filters. Our engines are too valuable to risk anything else.
