Default NO AC

Bummer
I have to drive from the Bay Area to San Diego on Saturday and back on Sunday. Take the 928....Ta Da!
Air Con is not working...Haven't told my wife yet as she will be my passenger. I guess I will take it to a local AC shop and have them fill it. It did work a few months ago but I hardly use it. Going down Hwy 5 in this time of year it gets really toasty
At least the windows work.

Do they leak just because they are old??? ( like some of us)

Are you still R12? If you are I would stay with that if you can find it. The R134 conversion is fine if you can replace every seal with the green seals. That might be a good idea anyway.

Yes. Rubber hoses and compressor seals (alone) lasting 33 years is not common.

And as long as you can buy R-12...you want to use it.

BTW....just barely "balmy" in California, this weekend. Fresno 108, Bakersfield 107, Death Valley 124...all on Saturday.

Make sure the heater control valve closes is the first step. If it doesn't, tie wrap it shut, for the weekend. You are not likely going to need the heater....

You might want to leave early in the morning....

I just had my system checked and it totally failed to hold a vacuum. Shop recommend to change the compressor and filter. Hope yours turn out better.

Not sure what they are referring to when they say filter. receiver/dryer maybe? That would be a good idea but your compressor is likely just fine. Does it fire up with no bad noises when hotwired? I would think it just needs the new seals at the connecting points.

I was wondering about the same thing. The compressor start and run quietly. As for the filter, he gave me a number that appear on it - RD 6759 - if that help.

I also wondered about what gas was in my system. I will go back and ask.

Thanks.

101 once it leaves the coast, will suckkkk as well.

Vanster..you met with my wife unit at the BBQ...shes in San Diego right now, flying back late afternoon Sunday.

If you can -get- there, she could fly you back to the bay area...I could ask, she'll love it.

Update: Vanster, she says "Hell ya, bring your headset tomorrow for him to use".

So..I fly down tomorrow, coming back next Thursday, but she's set to fly ya back all comfy in her plane Sunday anytime you wanna leave.

Lumme know.

Thanks Jeff for the offer but I need to make a very quick stop in to see the mom
in the SF Valley ( HOT ). We are going to Del Mar. the wife unit is a wood worker and she won at the Furniture Society so we have to go that Saturday night. Might drive all the way up the coast on Sunday.
No choice but to go down 5 and. I'm going to work on the AC today

Good News is that the SFV is not supposed to be real hot this weekend. We sit in the eastern corner and enjoy a climate that's the moving-mean of downtown LA and SFV temps. We expect low 80's for highs this weekend.

For the car: If the refrigerant is leaking out, first order of business is to fix the leaks. Casually adding refrigerant a few times a year can get real expensive real fast, especially if you stick with R-12.

Maybe you can add a dash across the southern border of Baja San Diego, and smuggle a cylinder of R-12 back with you... Turns out Mexico never signed on with the Montreal Accord that limits chloro-flourocarbon proliferation. Bring your passports, and cash for bail.

"Cash for Bail" has a wonderful ring to it
I think I'm not getting power to the compressor and maybe when I did the timing belt I knocked a wire loose. Going to poke around and see what I can come up with

So, the AC shop's claim you had leaks and needed a compressor and "filter" (most likely meant "drier") were bogus?
